Ex-Turnstile Guitarist Brady Ebert Ruled Incompetent to Stand Trial in Attempted Murder Case
A judge has ruled former Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert mentally incompetent to stand trial in an attempted murder case in which he is accused of running over singer Brendan Yates’ father with a car.
According to the Baltimore Banner, Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Karla Smith deemed Ebert a danger to himself and others on Tuesday, and declared that his competency will be reevaluated at a hearing on January 19th. The trial had been set to begin on October 5th.
The judge refused to allow Ebert to speak after declaring him incompetent, but the guitarist began yelling in the courtroom, saying he had already fired his attorney Mark Sobel at a hearing earlier this month, exclaiming, “I don’t know why he is here today.”
Ebert also shouted that the case was an “extreme miscarriage of justice” and alleged that police illegally obtained an arrest warrant. He was escorted out of the courtroom by court officers.
After the hearing, his attorney Sobel told reporters, “Hopefully, he’ll get the proper treatment for his competency to be restored, so we can proceed to trial in this case.”
The decision by the judge came after Sobel had asked for a competency evaluation for his client at the aforementioned hearing earlier this month.
Ebert was arrested for an incident in March in which he apparently ran over Turnstile singer Brendan Yates’ 79-year-old father William with a 2001 Buick LeSabre, causing the elder Yates significant injuries.
Turnstile have distanced themselves from Ebert, who was let go from the band four years ago. At the time of the incident, the hardcore act stated, “Turnstile cut ties with Brady Ebert in 2022 in response to a consistent pattern of harmful behavior affecting himself, the band, and the community. After exhausting every available resource to support his access to help and recovery, a boundary ultimately had to be set when healthy communication was no longer possible and he began threatening violence… We have no language left for Brady.”
In the meantime, Turnstile are in the midst of their “NEVER ENOUGH PT. 2” North American tour, which runs through an October 18th show in Santa Ana, California, with tickets available here. The band will also perform on Saturday Night Live on October 3rd.
