Coronation Street's Bernie Winter-Alahan receives the news she's been dreading next week, when she learns she carries the BRCA gene mutation.

After weeks of worrying about her genetic risk for developing cancer, Bernie finally hears back from the hospital with the results.

It's a particularly emotional revelation after her son Kit’s diagnosis, and Bernie covers her upset before running upstairs.

Worried Dev and Kit both observe Bernie's reaction, not knowing how best to comfort her. Will Bernie have the strength to tell her family?

Speaking recently about her character's future, Jane Hazlegrove – who plays Bernie – told us: "I think the key message is to get tested and share your family history with others.

"Bernie has some massive decisions to make. For a woman pushing 60, deciding to lose her breasts is huge, especially because she and Dev are such a physical couple.

"But she has about a 70% chance of developing breast cancer, and she wants to be around for her grandkids and the quads. She's determined to stick around.

"She's not sure what the psychological effects of the surgery will be, but she has to make a decision and she says: 'I'm still going to be me'. It's going to be a long road, but she's not going anywhere."

Corrie is currently exploring how breast cancer can affect both men and women, with Kit's journey providing a male perspective on the illness.

Jane added: "It's rarely discussed or referred to, so I was thrilled that Corrie was starting this conversation.

"In my own recent experience at a breast clinic, I saw only one pamphlet on the wall regarding male breast cancer, yet there were two men there at the same time. It blew my mind. We need to be having these conversations."

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
