2026 U-20 WWC: England Coach Disappointed With Defeat To Falconets

England U-20 women’s head coach Lydia Bedford has expressed her disappointment following her side’s 3-0 defeat to Nigeria in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

The Young Lionesses were eliminated from the tournament after a difficult encounter in Bielsko-Biala, with Nigeria’s Falconets securing a convincing victory.

Falconets In Cruise Control

Nigeria took an early lead through midfielder Tosin Rafiu, putting England on the back foot.

Falconets goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma was also instrumental in keeping Nigeria ahead, producing a brilliant save to deny Princess Ademiluyi.

Uzoma later made another crucial intervention, saving a penalty from the in-form Rachel Maltby by pushing the effort onto the crossbar and out of danger.

Bedford Not Happy With Defeat

Speaking after the match, Bedford praised the tournament experience but admitted she was disappointed to see her team exit at the Round of 16 stage.

“I think it’s been a fantastic tournament. We’ve enjoyed being part of it, but we’re disappointed to be going home at this stage,” Bedford told FIFA.

Nigeria’s Direct Approach Crucial

Bedford also acknowledged that England struggled to deal with Nigeria’s direct approach and physicality.

“Nigeria’s forwards were very effective in being direct and physical, and I think that’s something that perhaps we struggled to compete with at times.”

Valuable Experience For The Future

Despite the defeat, Bedford believes the experience will prove valuable to her players as they progress in their careers.

“I think this experience will be extremely important to them as they move into their senior careers and hopefully push towards either Sarina Wiegman’s squad in Brazil next year or work with me in the U-23s going forward.”
