Sheriff Country Deviates From TV’s Reliable World-Building Trick For The Better

Warning! SPOILERS ahead for Sheriff Country season 2, episode 2.Sharon’s appearance in Sheriff Country season 2, episode 2 highlights how the Fire Country spinoff uses crossovers with the parent series differently, enriching the CBS police procedural in an unusual way. Sheriff Country’s backdoor pilot in Fire Country season 2, episode 6 introduced Mickey both in relation to Sharon’s difficult family history and as a character worthy of being at the center of the story, as CBS was already rumored to be exploring several ways to expand the Fire Country universe at the time.

Mickey’s appearances in Fire Country seasons 2 and 3 established Sharon and Mickey’s bond as a key link between Fire Country and its spinoff. Sheriff Country season 1 continued to build on that premise, as the most common crossovers between the two shows in the Fire Country franchise featured Mickey and Sharon spending time together to catch up or support one another professionally. That was also the case for Sheriff Country season 2, episode 2, which saw Sharon’s visit be instrumental for both the investigation into the Stoyanovs and Mickey working through her feelings.

After all, Sheriff Country season 1’s ending imploded Mickey’s life with the revelation of Eva Santos actually being her long-lost mother Maria, with the development following several other emotional reveals, like Alec’s corruption and Wes’s betrayal. Everything that happened to Mickey over 72 hours made Sharon’s visit long overdue, and Sheriff Country’s crossover with Fire Country finally brought back Sharon, whose role in season 2, episode 2 highlighted the added value her presence brings to Sheriff Country, more than big action crossovers.

Mickey made a point to convince Sharon that having to work with Eva would be like working with any other stranger, as her mother left her when she was six years old, meaning Mickey didn’t know her. Investigating the Stoyanovs nevertheless proved Mickey wrong in Sheriff Country season 2, episode 2, as seeing Eva agree with Wes prompted Mickey to react incredibly negatively and put a stop to their joint investigation into the Bulgarian cartel.

Sharon’s entire role in Sheriff Country season 2, episode 2 was to support Mickey. Whether that meant aiding her professionally by faking a fire inspection so that the DEA could plant a bug at the Stoyanovs’ café or listening to Mickey process her feelings about having to deal with Eva, Sharon was available and willing to be there for Mickey in whichever way she needed.

That Mickey was able to finally admit that she couldn’t treat Eva as if she were a stranger because of their shared history is a direct consequence of Sharon making space for Mickey, even if it took her time and disagreeing about a professional matter with Eva to admit her feelings. Their exchanges in Sheriff Country season 2, episode 2 thus show how the added value of having Sharon cross over from Fire Country to Sheriff Country is most visible when her bond with Mickey is at the heart of the story.

Why Sheriff Country Doesn't Need Big Fire Country Crossovers

Sheriff Country season 2, episode 2 and Fire Country season 5, episode 2 both included at least one character from the other show, and yet, the former didn’t need to do so for its most action-focused parts of the story. Indeed, while Fire Country season 5, episode 2 directly involved Hank and Mickey in the chase of the active shooter on the mountain, Sheriff Country season 2, episode 2 didn’t do the same with Sharon, who instead proved fundamental in the intimate, emotional talks between Sharon and Mickey.

Sheriff Country season 2, episode 2 had plenty of action. Between Wes sniffing around the Stoyanovs’ lair and his being taken by them at the end of the episode, Sheriff Country season 2, episode 2 ensured that the stakes were high. Still, that didn’t involve a Fire Country character, as Sheriff Country season 2’s main case steadily continued without needing its parent series to provide extra shocking developments.

What Sheriff Country needs is a way for Mickey to be vulnerable. Between Eva acting as Sheriff Country season 2’s villain and Wes not being someone his own daughter trusts anymore, it’s inevitable for Mickey to close herself off and refuse to rely on others. Sharon’s presence gives Mickey someone she can and wants to rely on, as Mickey could do the same with Skye but wouldn’t want to burden her, making Sharon’s Sheriff Country appearances more important if they don’t involve a massive crisis, instead focusing on emotionally supporting Mickey.
