Prabowo calls for education-based drug rehabilitation model

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto said President Prabowo Subianto had directed the development of an educational scheme to support the rehabilitation of drug addicts, including youth.

"We outlined plans to design an educational and rehabilitation model that can truly help young people recover and go on to lead productive lives," Brian said following a cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He affirmed that his ministry will collaborate with universities, particularly medical and psychology faculties with extensive experience in drug rehabilitation, to develop the appropriate concept and methods.

Drawing on experiences shared by researchers, hospital representatives, and university officials, he explained that drug rehabilitation programs are increasingly leveraging technology alongside educational frameworks developed by several higher education institutions.

"We will draw on all of these experiences to formulate best practices developed by universities," he said, adding that the move is aimed at ensuring that the rehabilitation process truly addresses the issues faced by youth struggling with drug abuse.

At Tuesday's meeting, the President also highlighted similar approaches implemented by several overseas universities. The discussion comes amid ongoing access to illicit substances on the ground targeting Indonesian youth.

The meeting also discussed leveraging university research findings to support drug control efforts.

The Minister noted that research outcomes developed by higher education institutions will be aligned with the needs of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and the Ministry of Health, including for therapeutic purposes.

In addition to Brian, the President also summoned several officials, including Head of BNN Suyudi Ario Seto, Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Arif Satria, Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas, and Deputy Minister of Health Dante Saksono Harbuwono.
