On a humid August afternoon, as storm clouds threaten, a quintet of guys who look like they just stepped out of The Matrix approaches the Vessel, the spiraling steel structure in Manhattan’s Hudson Yards. Against the backdrop of its blue lights and fire-red central glow, they pose — in their black leather, coordinated metallic accessories, slicked-back hair, dark shades and Mexican cowboy boots — with dead-serious expressions.
It’s pure Fuerza Regida — the música mexicana band from San Bernardino, Calif., known for stretching the boundaries of corridos tumbados with the bravado of SoCal gangster rap and, occasionally, club-oriented experimentation. The group’s charismatic singer, Jesús Ortiz Paz, better known as JOP, looks up at the Vessel’s futuristic geometry approvingly. “It’s what we’re on right now,” he says.
The Vessel is also a fitting representation of Fuerza’s next era — its upcoming album, which its team will only say is coming soon, is rumored to be titled 2032 — and its most consequential expansion yet. The band has just completed its first U.S. stadium tour, a run that grossed $53.2 million and moved 369,000 tickets across nine sold-out shows, according to Billboard Boxscore.
