KP2MI, Udayana University establish Migrant Center

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection (KP2MI) has partnered with Bali's Udayana University to establish a migrant center, a move aimed at strengthening higher education's role in supporting the protection of migrant workers.
"Through education, research, innovation, and community service, Udayana University can contribute to strengthening the knowledge, competencies, and readiness of the younger generation," P2MI Minister Mukhtarudin said on Friday.
Mukhtarudin emphasized that upskilling is crucial to ensuring that migrant workers possess competencies aligned with global labor market demands.
Therefore, he added, prospective migrant workers must be equipped with proper skills, understand placement procedures, and be able to secure jobs through legal, safe, and protected employment channels.
Meanwhile, Udayana University Rector I Ketut Sudarsana said the partnership reflects the university's commitment to delivering tangible contributions through education, research, and community service.
According to him, protecting migrant workers goes beyond the job placement process. It encompasses key areas such as competency, language proficiency, and cultural understanding, as well as access to information, healthcare, and readiness for the global workforce.
He added the Udayana University Migrant Center can serve as a hub for coordination, integrating the potential of academic study programs, job training centers, government agencies, and the business sector to support capacity-building and protection for prospective migrant workers.
Sudarsana said the migrant center serves as a one-stop service for migrant workers, handling preparation, building awareness, and promoting financial literacy, while also addressing healthcare needs.
On the language front, Sudarsana noted that Udayana University already has a language center and several language degree programs within its Faculty of Humanities, including English, French, Japanese, and Mandarin.
The Ministry of P2MI and Udayana University signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Friday in Bali to leverage and advance academic, technological, and institutional resources to protect migrant workers.
The scope of the partnership includes education and human resource development, research, innovation, and community service.
