RoS suspends Perikatan activities, issues show-cause notice over Bersatu complaint

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 — The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has issued a show-cause notice to the opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN) and ordered an immediate suspension of all its activities nationwide.

In a statement last night, the regulatory department confirmed it issued the notice on September 22 under Subsection 13(2) of the Societies Act 1966 (Act 832), giving PN a stipulated period to respond.

The RoS clarified that the notice was triggered by a formal complaint lodged by component party Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), stressing that the step does not represent a final deregistration order.

Following the notice, the regulator invoked Subsection 13(2A) of the Act to freeze all PN activities effective September 23.

The department described the suspension as a protective measure to safeguard the coalition’s interests while it resolves an alleged breach of its party constitution, urging the public to avoid speculation and rely strictly on official statements.

In a counter-statement, PN confirmed receiving the notice, which outlines the RoS’s intent to cancel the coalition’s registration should it fail to satisfy the registrar within a 30-day show-cause window.

The coalition noted that the dispute stems from Bersatu’s complaint regarding a PN meeting held on July 16, 2026.

PN also confirmed receiving the separate suspension order, which halts all coalition operations until further notice.

The coalition highlighted the contentious timing of the enforcement actions, noting that both notices were served on consecutive days on September 22 and 23, directly coinciding with the announcement and dissolution of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly ahead of snap state elections.

PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the coalition rejects the legal basis of the RoS decision and is preparing immediate legal challenges in court to protect its registration.

Takiyuddin asserted that PN “did not rule out” the possibility that the enforcement action was the byproduct of bad-faith (mala fide) political pressure orchestrated by elements both within and outside the coalition.

Urging grassroots members and supporters to remain calm, Takiyuddin pledged that the coalition would provide transparent updates as the situation develops.

He also instituted an immediate internal gag order, barring all coalition officials other than himself and the PN chairman from issuing public statements on the matter.
