Serie A | Bologna 2-1 Monza: Skorupski to the rescue for third straight victory

Bologna came back from an early Monza goal to secure a third straight win thanks to Tommaso Pobega, Federico Bernardeschi, and the Lukasz Skorupski penalty save, their first home victory since April.
The hosts were fired up and fresh off back-to-back victories away to Cagliari and Milan, the latter thanks to a Samuel Mbangula hat-trick, yet were still without a home win all season. Riccardo Orsolini was back in the squad, but Roberto Piccoli, Jay Enem, Lorenzo De Silvestri and Emil Holm continued their absence. Monza’s form crumbled in recent weeks, losing three of the last four games. Michael Folorunsho, Yvan Maye, Jan Ziolkowski and Matteo Pessina remained on the treatment table.
See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

Jens Odgaard nodded a Juan Miranda cross over in the opening minute, but Arthur Theate dived onto a loose ball with Dany Mota Carvalho and caught his opponent for a penalty, converted by Capocannoniere Gustavo Varela.
Bologna had a double chance to equalise, as first Odgaard was denied by Noel Tornqvist at the near post, then Federico Bernardeschi failed to turn in the rebound.

Monza have a very poor record defending from set plays, but there was precious little they could do about the equaliser when Tommaso Pobega peeled off from his marker for a sensational volley from 13 yards on Miranda’s corner.

Lewis Ferguson couldn’t beat Tornqvist from close range, but Bologna started the second half aggressively and angrily. They wanted at least a free kick on the edge of the area, but Saba Goglichidze got the ball in a sliding tackle on Niccolò Cambiaghi, and moments later Arthur Theate was dragged back by Lucchesi as he went for a header. A penalty was inevitable following the VAR review, and Bernardeschi converted to turn the game around.

VAR got involved again for another Monza penalty, this one quite harsh on Nadir Zortea for deflecting a Jay Robinson cross with an arm that was quite close to the body. Patrick Cutrone stepped up, but Lukasz Skorupski managed to parry the spot-kick.
Miranda’s free kick was smothered by Tornqvist in added time and Mbangula really should’ve scored when set up by El Azzouzi, but ballooned over the bar.
Cutrone also threatened to make up for the earlier penalty error with a snapshot in injury time, but once again Skorupski was ready for it.
