Tornadoes sweep across Sicily, leaving flipped cars and damaged buildings

Translate

A rare double waterspout struck the coast near Marsala, in western Sicily, on Friday, 9 October, before moving inland and causing damage to buildings, vehicles and farmland.

The two swirling columns formed over the sea near Marsala's port before reaching land and moving towards the surrounding Trapani area.

The Alcide De Gasperi school in the Terrenove district was also severely damaged.

In nearby Petrosino, a car was hit by the tornado and thrown into a ravine. The two people inside were injured and taken to hospital.

Footage filmed from the Biscione seafront in Petrosino, near Sibiliana, shows the tornado approaching the mainland from the sea.

The extreme weather left a trail of damage across the coastal area, with emergency services responding to the aftermath.
