Minister Sarmuji seeks cross-ministry push to boost economic growth

Industry Minister Muhammad Sarmuji said he would strengthen coordination with other ministries and agencies to maximize industry’s contribution to economic growth and job creation.

“That is not an easy undertaking; it is a challenge we must face and resolve,” he said after a ministerial handover ceremony in Jakarta on Friday, a day after his inauguration.

Sarmuji said the Industry Ministry needed a broad vision to strengthen Indonesia’s industrial sector, adding that achieving the goal would require cooperation across government institutions.

He cited coordination with the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming to attract more investment and with the Finance Ministry to seek greater flexibility and incentives for industrial players.

Sarmuji also stressed close coordination with the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, saying adequate gas supplies were needed to support industrial operations.

Cooperation with the Agriculture Ministry could also help create greater added value from the upstream sector through industrialization and downstreaming, he said.

“In short, we cannot work alone. Collaboration is essential to positioning the industrial sector as a driver of economic growth and job creation,” he said.

Sarmuji made similar remarks on Thursday, October 1, after President Prabowo Subianto swore him in at the State Palace in Jakarta, replacing Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita.

He said the ministry would identify and address longstanding industrial challenges in stages, prioritizing sectors with strong potential to create jobs and drive economic growth, including footwear and textiles.
