Spider-Man: Brand New Day's cut Daredevil cameo has been revealed

Charlie Cox's Daredevil almost made a cameo in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, screenwriter Chris McKenna has revealed. The idea for Matt Murdock to cross paths with Peter Parker again came in the early stages of writing the film when things looked very different.

Speaking on The Bulwark podcast, McKenna revealed that one of the original ideas for the film would see Peter leave New York and become "a badass hero in Southeast Asia, taking down Southeast Asian gangs".

McKenna explained: "Peter lives on a boat, fixes its engine, and makes his own web fluid before suddenly discovering another Spider-Man back home.

"Then he gets a message and a video about Spider-Man back in New York, charming fans. He’s like, 'What? There’s some imposter in New York.' So then he has to go all the way back to New York to deal with this imposter. Who is this guy?'"

Peter then finds himself in a messy legal web after the fake Spider-Man uses his web fluid and suit and, crucially, has trademarked the Spider-Man brand and its web fluid. He then receives a cease-and-desist from the imposter Spider-Man.

McKenna continued: "Then he had to hire Matt Murdock as a lawyer to help him fight. Because Peter Parker gets a cease-and-desist from this other guy. 'You can’t pretend that you’re Spider-Man.' And so it began this whole thing that was pretty fun, but it was just a different story.

"We wrote these scenes, I think, or we recently detailed an outline. He had Daredevil, Matt Murdock, as his lawyer, but he didn’t remember him. But he had to pull in Matt Murdock to help him out of this jam and deal with it.

"It was fun stuff, especially early on in the process. Sometimes you start going down roads, and you’re having a lot of fun, even though in the back of your head you’re thinking, 'We probably can’t do this.'"

But while we didn't get to see Daredevil in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, there was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it nod to Murdock.

Will Dixon, who served as a graphics assistant on Brand New Day, revealed the easter egg via social media, showing that inside Peter Parker's wallet was a business card for the Nelson Murdock & Page law firm.

Dixon wrote: "You never know if a wallet will get a close up, so you have to create dressing related to the character. I designed a Nelson Murdock & Page business card, as I imagined Matt would’ve given him one during No Way Home and Peter would’ve held onto it."
