Fahmi kicks off Doha visit M'sian diaspora engagement, ITU PP-26 preparations

DOHA: Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil is scheduled to begin his itinerary today with engagements with the Malaysian community, including sporting activities and a meeting with the diaspora, before meeting with the Malaysian delegation ahead of the 2026 International Telecommunication Union Plenipotentiary Conference (ITU PP-26).
He is expected to start the day's engagements with a breakfast meeting with Malaysia's Ambassador to Qatar, Faizal Razali, before officiating at the bowling competition organised in conjunction with the 2026 Malaysian Games in Qatar (SUQMA).
At the ceremony, Fahmi is set to speak before joining Malaysia's Ambassador and the Malaysia Association in Qatar (MAQ) president, Dr Mohd Faris Khamidi, in the ceremonial first bowl to mark the official opening.
He is then slated to attend a luncheon with the Malaysian diaspora, bringing together representatives of MAQ, the Malaysian Business Executive Council-Qatar (MBEC), the Malaysian community and student associations in Qatar.
The meeting will also offer an opportunity for the government spokesman to engage with Malaysians residing, working, doing business and studying in Qatar.
In the afternoon, Fahmi is scheduled to attend a tea session with mobile network operator (MNO) representatives, followed by a pre-conference meeting with the Malaysian delegation as part of preparations for ITU PP-26.
Fahmi is accompanied by the Communications Ministry's deputy secretary-general (Telecommunications Infrastructure) Mano Verabathran.
Also part of the Malaysian delegation are representatives from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and key players in the country's telecommunications industry, including Telekom Malaysia (TM), CelcomDigi, Maxis and U Mobile.
Fahmi arrived in Doha at 10.30pm local time (3.30am Malaysian time) to lead the Malaysian delegation to ITU PP-26, which runs from Nov 6 to 11 and serves as an important platform for the country's participation in international discussions and cooperation on telecommunications and digital technology.
The working visit focuses on strengthening Malaysia's position in the international telecommunications arena, including efforts to retain its seat on the ITU Council for the 2027-2030 term.
