Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Serbia agreed to elevate relations toward concrete cooperation in the economy, industrial downstreaming and food and energy security, Indonesia's Foreign Ministry said.

The agreement was reached Saturday at the fifth Bilateral Consultation Forum between the two countries in Jakarta.

"In the forum, both sides reaffirmed their commitment as fellow founding countries of the Non-Aligned Movement to uphold the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity," the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

Grata Endah Werdaningtyas, the ministry's director general for the Americas and Europe, led Indonesia's delegation and outlined eight national development missions, known as Asta Cita, focused on infrastructure, digital transformation and food security.

As the world's largest nickel producer, Indonesia invited Serbia to collaborate on mineral exploration and downstreaming of the electric vehicle supply chain.

Indonesia also outlined a vision to join the global AI ecosystem, including developing data centers and chip and semiconductor supply chains.

The two countries noted a positive trade trend, with bilateral trade rising an average of 20.62 percent over 2021-2025 to reach US$53.6 million in 2025.

Indonesian investment in Serbia totals 20.5 million euros in instant noodle and processed mushroom production, while Serbian investment in Indonesia neared US$1 million in the first half of 2026.

To tap markets in central and eastern Europe, the delegations agreed to explore a free trade agreement and hold a joint economic commission to diversify and boost trade.

Serbia praised Indonesia's initiatives to build the Nusantara Capital City and the Giant Sea Wall project, and offered itself as a hub for Indonesian businesses and creative industries seeking to enter the European market.

The forum also agreed to expand cooperation on manpower, exploring government-to-government arrangements to ensure legal protection for Indonesian migrant workers in Serbia.

The sixth forum will be held in Serbia on a date to be determined.
