Black Bear has acquired domestic rights to Honeymoon / Funeral, a romantic comedy starring Rebecca Ferguson, Greta Lee and Carrie Coon that wrapped production in September.

Sources said the project is one of a handful to have been successfully shopped at the newly created TIFF market, alongside Josh Giuliano’s horror flick River and the Michelle Yeoh starrer The Surgeon.

Directed by two-time Emmy nominee Nahnatchka Khan, Honeymoon / Funeral follows two women (Ferguson and Lee) who meet on a flight from LA to London – one en route to her honeymoon by herself after being left at the altar by her girlfriend, the other headed home for her mother’s funeral – and wind up spending the week together.

Khan and Jennifer Carreras produced for Fierce Baby, alongside Emmy nominee Julia Bicknell, who penned the script. MRC financed and oversaw production, with FilmNation Entertainment acting as worldwide sales agent.

Katie Anderson, Black Bear’s EVP of Acquisitions, called Honeymoon / Funeral “an original and hilarious story that is deeply human, anchored by the performances of Rebecca, Greta, and Carrie, three of the best actresses working today.”

Anderson added, “We can’t wait to partner with our friends at MRC and FilmNation to share this world that Nahnatchka and Julia have created with audiences.”

Next up for domestic release via Black Bear is Wicker, starring Academy Award winner Olivia Colman, Alexander Skarsgård, and Peter Dinklage, on October 26.
