Manokwari, W Papua (ANTARA) - Police in Manokwari, West Papua, deployed a special team and rapid-response unit on Sunday to pursue a suspect accused of assaulting a Dutch tourist identified as YD.

Manokwari Police Chief Senior Commissioner Ongky Isgunawan said in a written statement Sunday that the deployment followed a public report through the police emergency hotline 110.

“We deployed a special team and rapid-response unit to pursue the suspect in the assault on a tourist on Jalan Asrama Tingkat in Amban, Manokwari,” Ongky said.

After receiving the report, officers went to the scene to secure the area and evacuate the victim for medical treatment, he said.

Police also gathered information and questioned witnesses to trace the suspect and establish what happened.

“We will handle this case transparently, professionally and in accordance with procedures,” he said.

Ongky said police were committed to protecting and serving everyone, including foreign nationals within the jurisdiction of Manokwari Police.

Residents with information about the incident or the suspect’s whereabouts were urged to contact police to assist the investigation.

“We urge the public to remain calm and not take the law into their own hands while police handle the case,” he said.

He also encouraged residents to use the police emergency hotline 110 if they need assistance or encounter security or public-order disturbances.
