Warning: this article contains spoilers for Chicago Fire season 15, episode 2, "Rattle the Cage."Chicago Fire started season 15 by finally giving Severide his long-awaited promotion to Captain, and he had already settled into Boden's old office by the beginning of episode 2, "Rattle the Cage." That said, he's also already dealing with an issue that was never a problem for Boden during his time as Battalion Chief at Firehouse 51, and it involves Kidd. The couple has been doing well enough for long enough that their latest season 15 twist could spell disaster in NBC's 2026 fall schedule.
The departure of Dermot Mulroney as Chief Pascal (and the short tenure of his replacement) meant that there was a vacancy at 51 that needed to be filled. Severide's promotion was enough for him to become the leader of his longtime firehouse, without necessarily earning the rank of Battalion Chief just yet. His biggest issue as leader in season 15 was originally dealing with the aftermath of Cruz's injury, and the potential public relations fallout in the following weeks.
After a visit from the CFD brass in "Rattle the Cage," Severide has officially been rattled in a whole new way, as he learned that he and Kidd might not be able to coast by with their workplace romance anymore. Even though they've been a couple for many years now, the season 15 changes are highlighting an issue that hasn't been fully addressed.
Severide's New Firehouse 51 Role Forces Him To Address His Workplace Dynamic With Kidd
Chief Lowen paid a visit to Firehouse 51 in "Rattle the Cage" to check in with the newly promoted Captain Severide and take a look at how Kidd was training the new recruits. His conversation with Severide was friendly, but his parting words didn't exactly instill the longtime Squad 3 leader with a lot of confidence. Lowen made the point that Severide and Kidd no longer work with each other; now that Severide is leading 51, Kidd works for him.
The timing couldn't have been worse, since Severide was facing two different requests for what to do with 51's limited discretionary funds. The vast majority of the first responders wanted him to use the money to fix the hot water in the showers; Kidd wanted him to invest in a new piece of equipment for training the probies. When she pushed back after he tried to set a boundary, he finally came out and said that she can't expect him to always say yes to her requests.
Kidd was clearly taken aback, and the relationship between the husband and wife was fairly chilly for the rest of the episode. They did finally come to terms with each other by the end of the episode, with Kidd establishing that she didn't expect Severide to always agree with her. Severide also seemed to realize that he was overcompensating, and he approved her request for the discretionary funds. A relationship crisis was averted, but the power imbalance of the 51 captain being married to one of the lieutenants under his command will surely lead to problems in season 15.
Can Severide & Kidd's Relationship Survive Their New Power Imbalance?
Severide and Kidd have already survived their fair share of hurdles, including when they went their separate ways for months on end to pursue other opportunities. Their attempts to become parents over the previous couple of seasons came to nothing after she suffered a miscarriage and they weren't able to permanently adopt or foster a child. None of those issues were enough to ruin Stellaride, but their careers are very important to both of them. The power imbalance at Firehouse 51 could be a bigger hurdle than they've ever faced before, especially since getting married.
Despite Chicago Fire's extensive history of workplace romances, the show never fully explored the complications of a power imbalance within the firehouse. Casey outranked Dawson and Brett during their relationships, but he also wasn't the leader of the firehouse; Severide outranked Kidd until she became an officer as well, but her status on Truck while he led Squad generally meant that they could avoid major issues in the chain of command. That's simply not possible anymore, and Severide learned from the visiting chief that his leadership is under scrutiny already.
The good news is that Severide and Kidd are married, so they've made a serious commitment that can't just end in a simple breakup. This is also a meaty storyline for the duo, especially since Chicago Fire has already run through most of the obvious relationship problems for the couple by this point in season 15.
Scratch & Peek

The power imbalance won't be fun for them to figure out, but it could certainly be intriguing to watch. It's also a sign that Chicago Fire is dealing with the complications of Severide's promotion, rather than just slotting him into the job to avoid casting a new Chief. The issue feels true to life, and Chicago Fire could deliver one of its top arcs in season 15 with it. As always, the drama series airs new episodes on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
