Jon Bernthal's The Equalizer Meets John Wick Action Thriller Won't Back Down On Apple TV Streaming

With his role in the MCU as Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, Jon Bernthal has only become a bigger star in the last few years. After debuting as the character in Netflix's Daredevil and, later, The Punisher, Bernthal recently reprised his role for Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), which has been a major hit. But Bernthal continues to regularly appear in major projects outside of the MCU as well, including movies like The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), Sicario (2015), and The Odyssey (2026), as well as a 2016 action thriller that is now experiencing a resurgence with audiences.

10 years after its release, The Accountant is once again a streaming hit. Starring Bernthal and Ben Affleck, the action thriller film, which feels like a mix of The Equalizer and John Wick, ranks as the eighth most popular movie on Apple TV worldwide, as of writing, coming ahead of two notable titles.

The Accountant Can't Be Stopped On Apple TV

Directed by Gavin O'Connor, The Accountant stars Affleck as Christian Wolff, a math savant who finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy after he agrees to cook the books for a new client. Bernthal serves as a secondary antagonist in the movie, playing Christian's highly skilled hitman brother, Brax. The film also stars J.K. Simmons, Anna Kendrick, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Jeffrey Tambor, John Lithgow, and Jean Smart.

Though The Accountant may now be a decade old, it's currently beating both The Family Plan 2 (2025) and Greyhound (2020) in the Apple TV top 10 list. Coming ahead of the Affleck and Bernthal action film are titles including The Family Plan (2023), Napoleon (2023), Sherlock Holmes (2009), The Proposal (2009), The Gorge (2025), F1 (2025), and, in the top spot, Mayday (2026).

What's The Status Of The Accountant 3?

The Accountant was a box office success, grossing $155 million on a $44 million budget, and it would also go on to become an enduring streaming success, leading to confirmation of a sequel. The Accountant 2 hit theaters last year, increasing Bernthal's role and focusing more on the bond between Christian and Brax. The film, however, only grossed $103 million worldwide on an $80 million budget, making it a disappointment and raising questions about the planned Accountant 3.

O'Connor, Affleck, and writer Bill Dubuque have revealed that they do not intend for The Accountant 2's ending to be the end of the saga, with all three viewing the franchise as a trilogy. Dubuque recently told ScreenRant: "I believe Amazon definitely wants [a third film]," and this tracks with the second movie's more positive reviews. Still, a third installment hasn't yet gotten the green light, meaning The Accountant and its 2025 sequel are, for now, the only ways to enjoy Christian and Brax's story.
