The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will bring old and new faces to the franchise.
Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of cinema's most successful film series, grossing nearly $3 billion worldwide, winning 17 Academy Awards, and earning 30 Oscar nominations. Jackson was praised for his faithful adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work and for the cast carrying such a major franchise to the finish line. The franchise's legacy and Jackson's movies continue to stand the test of time, and many of the original faces will be returning.
However, one missing actor is certainly felt by the entire fanbase. Unfortunately for many, Viggo Mortensen is not returning as Aragorn, and it was reported that Jamie Dornan is taking on the role in Andy Serkis' The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. In an interview with L'Officiel, Dornan finally addressed the recasting that shocked many and gave his statement on the upcoming movie and his all-important role.
"There's pressure when you're trying to follow in those footsteps. I've been asked to play a super-iconic role, and I'll do my best. But for me, Aragorn will always be just Viggo. His performance is one of my all-time favorites, and I feel honored to try to recapture at least some of the energy he originally brought to the character. There's no part of me that's trying to outdo him."
Dornan's co-star, Leo Woodall, who is portraying Halvard, a Dúnadan Ranger, in The Hunt for Gollum shared his thoughts on his new cast mate and said, "I can say that, now, my Aragorn is Jamie Dornan." Mortensen appeared as Aragorn from 2001 to 2003 in Jackson's epic trilogy. The actor was a replacement for Stuart Townsend and ended up being a highly celebrated part of the trilogy. Swordsmaster Bob Anderson famously stated that the actor was the best swordsman he had ever trained.
Despite the critical acclaim, Dornan is set to take over Mortensen's role as Aragorn alongside Serkis, Sir Ian McKellen, Kate Winslet, Elijah Wood, Lee Pace, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Woodall. Jackson, who is returning as a producer for The Hunt for Gollum, shared an update on the status of the movie and stated: "The Hunt for Gollum is almost finished filming. I think there are about two weeks of shooting left."
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is canon to the original trilogy and takes place during the 17-year gap between Bilbo Baggin's birthday and Frodo's departure from the Shire. Gandalf recruits Aragorn (known then as Ranger Strider) to track down Gollum to keep Bilbo Baggins and the Shire safe from Sauron. The hunt leads to more of the truth being unveiled and then leading to the events of The Lord of the Rings.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is set to be released on December 17, 2027.
