Plateau killings: Northern CAN demands urgent action to halt bloodshed

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Northern States and Federal Capital Territory, FCT, has condemned the continued killings and destruction of property in Plateau State, urging the Federal and state governments to take immediate steps to restore peace and protect vulnerable communities.

Chairman of Northern CAN, Rev. Dr. Yakubu Pam, in a statement on Tuesday, expressed “deep sadness and grave concern” over the persistent violence and loss of innocent lives across affected communities.

The Christian body strongly condemned the attacks and called for an immediate end to what it described as “senseless bloodshed and destruction.”

Northern CAN urged President Bola Tinubu and the Plateau State Government to take firm and immediate measures to end the violence, protect residents and restore lasting peace and security in the affected areas.

According to the association, the repeated attacks and destruction of property underscore the need for a comprehensive review and strengthening of Nigeria’s security architecture.
“The persistent destruction of lives and property points to the urgent need for a comprehensive review and strengthening of the nation’s security architecture,” it said.

Northern CAN said Nigerians should be able to live, work, worship and raise their families without fear of attacks in their communities.
The association also expressed solidarity with families who lost loved ones and residents whose homes, livelihoods and communities had been affected by the violence.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the families who have lost loved ones and to all those whose homes, livelihoods, and communities have been affected by the violence,” the statement said.

It called on the Federal Government to make the restoration of peace and security in troubled communities a priority, stressing that the safety and protection of citizens must remain central to governance.

“The safety and protection of citizens must remain at the centre of governance and national attention,” Northern CAN said.
The association also appealed to residents of Plateau State to remain united and avoid actions capable of escalating tensions, urging them to pursue peace, justice and the protection of their communities.

“We equally call on the good people of Plateau State to remain united, reject actions capable of further escalating tensions, and work together in the pursuit of peace, justice, and the protection of their communities,” it said.

Reaffirming its commitment to peace, justice and reconciliation, Northern CAN urged relevant authorities to act swiftly to prevent further loss of lives.
“Northern CAN remains committed to peace, justice, reconciliation, and the protection of innocent lives. We urge all relevant authorities to act swiftly and decisively before more lives are lost,” Pam said.
