Mosimane’s first Bafana Bafana stint: The record behind the return

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has officially unveiled Pitso Mosimane as the new Bafana Bafana coach.

Mosimane takes over from Hugo Broos who was in charge for five years between May 2021 and July 2026.

He returns for a second stint as the national team coach after having managed the team between 2010 and 2012.

THE MOMBELA DEBACLE

Mosimane‘s first tenure will always be remembered, above all, for how it ended after an impressive start as Bafana Bafana head coach.

It was in the round of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, and Bafana Bafana needed a win against Sierra Leone.

That match ended in a draw, and the Bafana Bafana celebrated as they thought they had qualified for the tournament itself only to be told later that they were actually eliminated.

That moment left the entire South Africa embarrassed, and to date, it is still referred to as the “Mbombela Debacle”.

THE NUMBERS

Mosimane’s overall Bafana Bafana record sits at 15 matches, five wins, three draws and seven losses.

And while those numbers were clearly not impressive, Mosimane has since become one of the most successful coaches on the African continent.

It is exactly the main reason SAFA saw the need to bring him back, especially with the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on the horizon.
