Walmart gains after Deutsche Bank says its value proposition stands out in an inflationary backdrop

Walmart (MWT) pushed higher in early trading on Thursday after Deutsche Bank upgraded the retail giant to a Buy rating after having it set at Hold.
Analyst Krisztina Katai and her team see a more favorable setup into 2027. "We believe the current inflationary environment should reinforce WMT's value proposition and support accelerated share gains, while we think investors are starting to increasingly look beyond the headline pressure on U.S. comp," highlighted Katai.
In addition, the firm's expectation is that incremental margins will improve as higher-margin businesses continue to outgrow core retail and as automation benefits increasingly flow through the P&L. "Taken together, we see pricing tailwinds building, market share accelerating, and WMT’s flywheel strengthening, while greater disclosure around GMV could increasingly underscore the evolution from traditional retailer to technology-led marketplace," noted Katai.
Deutsche Bank's confidence in Walmart grew after it hosted CFO John David Rainey and the IR team for investor meetings in New York City. It was noted that WMT management remains highly confident in the underlying business and long-term algorithm, pointing to some of the strongest food share gains recently, continued e-commerce momentum, marketplace expansion, and robust advertising, and membership growth.
Shares of Walmart (WMT) showed a 2.8% gain in premarket action to $119.40. The 52-week high for the stock is $135.16.
