Dani Ramirez, Edmund Lalrindika scored a goal each, while Bipin Singh Thounaojam netted a brace as East Bengal started its Indian Super League (ISL) title defence in style, with a 4-0 win over Churchill Brothers here on Sunday.

Though the Red Machines looked the better side with their passing, East Bengal’s clinical finishing earned it maximum points in its opening match of the 2026-27 league.

Ramirez found the net within two minutes, curling in a shot with his left foot from a free-kick, while Edmund doubled the lead from David Lalhlansanga Hmar’s assist in the last minute of the first half.

David, who had scored a brace in East Bengal’s previous match, continued to impress with his runs, and played the role of a creator more than a striker in this clash.

Churchill Brothers, on the other hand, suffered due to lack of proper finishing and its best chance coming in the 17th minute. Wayde Lekay set up John Okoli on the far post in an attack against the run of play, but the final shot, off the Nigerian, clattered off the woodwork.

East Bengal returned to a defensive shape with the two-goal lead, but Bipin put the competition to bed five minutes from time. Ake Arnaud Loba, the club’s new signing, passed to Bipin, who curled it home with his left foot. Churchill Brothers’ shoulders slowly seemed to drop, and Bipin added insult to injury with his second of the night five minutes later.

Attacking on the counter, P.V. Vishnu carried the ball into the box — along the left channel — and crossed it for Bipin to tuck it in comfortably.

East Bengal will travel to Pune to face Inter Kashi next, on October 23, while Churchill Brothers will host Punjab FC in its next match two days later.
