Safeguard national interests, Navy chief urges passing-out cadets

The Chief of Training (Navy), Rear Admiral Abdulrasheed Haruna, has charged passing-out cadets of the Nigerian Defence Academy to uphold democratic values, safeguard Nigeria’s national interests and remain committed to their professional duties.

Haruna gave the charge on Wednesday as the Special Guest of Honour at the Beating of the Retreat and prize-giving ceremony held at the RSM Oliver Nzalgana Parade Ground, Afaka, Kaduna State.

According to the Major Academy Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Defence Academy, Irabor Njoka, Haruna commended the Academy for its commitment to excellence in training officers capable of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He urged the cadets to “stay vigilant, disciplined and focused” as they prepare for commissioning into the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

The Navy chief further called on the graduating officers to contribute meaningfully to tackling the evolving security challenges confronting Nigeria and allied nations.

Haruna stressed the need for “discipline, vigilance and unwavering commitment to duty,” while reminding the cadets to remain faithful to constitutional and democratic values.

He said the officers must uphold the responsibilities associated with their profession and remain committed to protecting the nation’s interests as they begin their military careers.

“Uphold democratic values, safeguard Nigeria’s national interests, and remain committed to their professional responsibilities as they prepare for commissioning into the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” he urged.

The NDA Commandant, Major General Oluyemi Olatoye, reaffirmed the Academy’s resolve to produce officers who are physically fit, mentally sound and morally upright.

Olatoye urged the graduating cadets to uphold the values acquired at the Academy throughout their military careers, stressing that the discipline and training received should continue to guide their conduct in service to the country.

The ceremony also featured the presentation of awards for outstanding performances during the 2025/2026 training cycle.

Mogadishu Battalion emerged as Champion Battalion after winning five trophies, while Collito Company of Ashanti Battalion was named Champion Company.

Individual awards were also presented to cadets who distinguished themselves in drills, sports, judo, taekwondo and other activities.

The event featured a combat march demonstration and a traditional Beating of the Retreat performance by the combined band, adding a ceremonial finale to the occasion.
