The Visayas power grid will be placed on yellow alert on Friday afternoon due to the unavailability of several power plants, while others are running at derated capacity.

In an advisory, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said a yellow alert will be hoisted over the island cluster from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.

The Visayas grid is operating at 2,545 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,471 MW.

The grid operator cited the following factors that contributed to the yellow alert declaration:

  • Unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants PEDC 3 and KSPC 1
  • Limited power import from Mindanao grid due to unplanned outage of FDC 3 and planned outages of GNPK 4 and TSI 2

NGCP said 4 plants are on forced outage on October, five plants since September, three plants since August, one plant since June, four plants since May, three plants since 2025, two plants since 2024, two plants since 2023, and one plant since 2021, while 18 plants are running on derated capacities.

The plants on outage and derated capacities resulted in a total of 657.1 MW of capacity unavailable to the Visayas grid. —VAL, GMA News
