Man Utd injury update: Luke Shaw, Carlos Baleba, Amad Diallo latest news and return dates

New signing Carlos Baleba also remained absent for Man Utd against the league phase debutants and reigning Azerbaijani champions, having yet to make his debut following a £70million transfer from Brighton last month.

Shaw was not spotted training in the build-up to United’s clash with Sabah and unsurprisingly sat out the game with Dorgu filling in at left-back.

The 31-year-old started the Premier League matches against Hull, Ipswich and Everton, but came off against the latter after 73 minutes due to cramp.

“It's a little bit of that [managing him],” Carrick told TNT Sports before the Sabah game. "He came off the other day [at Everton] with a little bit of cramp. We didn't want to take any risks really.

“We tried to manage him so we will see how he is after this one.”

A further update will be forthcoming from Carrick on Friday, but Shaw should be in contention for the Manchester derby, after which United host Brighton in the Carabao Cup third round before travelling to Fulham ahead of the extended three-week international break.

Potential return date: Sunday September 13, vs Manchester City (H)

Carlos Baleba

Long-time transfer target Baleba has yet to feature for United since that £70m switch from Brighton, having arrived carrying an ankle ligament injury that he suffered during the Seagulls’ pre-season friendly against Strasbourg at the start of August.

The Cameroon midfielder was expected to miss the first few weeks of the campaign, with Carrick previously stating that he hoped he would be in a position to make his debut before the international break.

“He's got a little ankle issue,” Carrick said of Baleba. “So, maybe a couple of weeks or so, maybe three weeks, we'll see. But we knew that before, so it's no major issue.

“It'll be great to have him back when we can. We're delighted with Carlos. I think huge potential, massive potential. I think it's a really exciting signing for us.”

Baleba seems unlikely to be involved against City, while it remains to be seen if his first United appearance could yet come against his former club in the Carabao Cup. Some sort of involvement at Fulham appears the best guess as things stand.

Potential return date: Sunday September 20, vs Fulham (A)

Amad Diallo

Amad was a shock absentee from the United squad for their dismal opening day defeat at newly-promoted Hull, having sustained an ankle issue in training.

Though Carrick has not placed a time frame on his return, there have been suggestions that the Ivory Coast winger could be out for up to six weeks, meaning he would not play until after the international break.

United return from that break with a home clash against Tottenham, before a trio of away games - including two in the Champions League - against Atletico Madrid, Leeds and Como.

Potential return date: Unknown, potentially Saturday October 10, vs Tottenham (H)

Matthijs de Ligt

De Ligt has still not played at all for United since November last year as the result of a persistent lower back issue that was initially described as minor but did not go away and belatedly required surgery in March, ruling him out of the World Cup.

However, he has been building up his fitness in training and is progressing well, according to Carrick, with a return now surely not too far off. However, United are understandably eager not to rush his comeback.

“It's positive. Matta [De Ligt] has trained really well,” Carrick said before the win over Sabah. “I think when you're out for such a long period of time and you get right to the final stages and you push and you push, you've got to manage that last stage. It's important.

“We've got to get that balance right for when to take the next step. But he's on a good track, he's in a good place, and it's great to have him back around us, and hopefully it'll be sometime soon.”

Potential return date: Wednesday September 16, vs Brighton (H) or Sunday September 20, vs Fulham (A)

Manuel Ugarte

Ugarte may well have left United this summer were it not for a cruciate ligament injury suffered on World Cup duty with Uruguay against Spain in June.

The midfielder underwent surgery and there were reports that his recovery would likely take between nine and 12 months, ruling him out until next year.

United’s veteran third-choice goalkeeper suffered a hamstring injury after starting in a pre-season friendly against Paris Saint-Germain in Sweden on August 8.

He has not been involved since and updates have been few and far between.
