17% RT Horror Movie Earns Blumhouse's 4th Historic Box Office Drop In Two Years

He has been writing and podcasting about pop culture (especially horror movies) for over a decade at platforms including Blumhouse, Fangoria, Dread Central, The Backlot, and Arrow in the Head.

Other Mommy has failed to nurture a following at the box office.

2026's Other Mommy, which is adapted from the Josh Malerman novel Incidents Around the House, was directed by Rob Savage (Host, The Boogeyman) and stars Jessica Chastain in a dual role as a mother and the evil doppelgänger entity that is trying to take her place. The movie debuted on October 9 with a 3-day gross of $27.8 million at the domestic box office, which was the best opening weekend for a Blumhouse movie in 2026 (though Atomic Monster, with whom Blumhouse recently merged, had a bigger debut with their 2026 hit Backrooms).

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Other Mommy is projected to end its sophomore weekend with a 3-day total of $8.3 million at the domestic box office. This sees it dropping a whopping 70% from its debut weekend. If these numbers hold, the movie will officially earn the ninth-biggest sophomore drop of all time for a Blumhouse movie of any genre (while their Top 10 biggest drops are primarily horror movies, the roster also includes their 2015 young adult musical flop Jem and the Holograms).

This marks the fourth time in roughly two years that a new Blumhouse movie has earned a drop so big that it landed in the Top 10, beginning with the AI thriller AfrAId, which debuted on August 30, 2024 and dropped 72.7% the following weekend. The other titles that have continued this trend are the 2025 Universal Monsters reboot Wolf Man (-70.2%) and the 2025 video game adaptation sequel Five Nights at Freddy's 2 (-69.7%).

Additionally, a drop of 70% would see Blumhouse's Other Mommy tying with 2016's Warcraft, 2009's The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and 2018's Bad Samaritan for the 229th biggest week two drop of all time, per Box Office Mojo. Below, see how Blumhouse's new Top 10 will look if the new movie lands at 70%, and where those movies rank on the overall all-time chart of the biggest sophomore drops.

Even if Other Mommy surges by the end of Sunday, it still seems likely that it will land somewhere in the Top 10. The 11th biggest Blumhouse sophomore drop belongs to 2015's Insidious: Chapter 3, which dropped 67.8%. While the new movie's total could fluctuate somewhat, it is ultimately improbable that it could rise another 2.2% in a single day.

This is especially unlikely because Other Mommy reviews have been downright vicious. Critics gave it a dismal 17% on Rotten Tomatoes while verified audience members gave it a slightly better, but still Rotten, 48%. Those numbers, combined with its catastrophic CinemaScore of D+, show that it has next to no chance of earning enough word of mouth to get a significant boost during its second weekend.

Even with this huge sophomore drop, Other Mommy can still be considered a success. The movie's reported budget is roughly $18 million, which most likely places its estimated break-even point somewhere around $45 million. It has already come within a hair of that benchmark at the domestic box office alone with a cumulative total of $44.8 million. With its global gross of more than $78 million, it has almost certainly already turned a profit.
