Indonesian Zombie Franchise ‘Zona Merah: Dead City’ Unveils Teaser, Takes Outbreak Into the City

The first teaser for “Zona Merah: Dead City,” the big-screen adaptation of Indonesian zombie series “Zona Merah,” has landed ahead of the film’s Jan. 14, 2027, release in Indonesian cinemas.

Screenplay Films, which unveiled the trailer on Friday, is billing the feature as the largest zombie production Indonesia has ever mounted.

The source series, a Vidio original, has racked up more than 34 million views on the streamer. The film follows survivors struggling to outlast an undead threat that grows far beyond anything the show attempted.

“As one of the most ambitious projects we’ve ever undertaken, we want to deliver an extraordinary cinematic experience for everyone, not just fans of the ‘Zona Merah’ series,” said Screenplay Films producer Wicky V. Olindo.

The teaser shows where that ambition has gone. The series stayed mostly in the countryside, among villages and quarantine sites. The film moves the outbreak onto city streets and into malls, with action also staged at an airport.

Sidharta Tata returns to direct and shares duties on the feature with co-director Fajar Martha Santosa.

“From day one, we knew we had to go all out for ‘Zona Merah: Dead City.’ We filmed across three cities in Indonesia, worked with hundreds of extras, and built incredible set pieces,” Tata said.

Several faces from the series are back, including Aghni Haque, Andri Mashadi, Devano, Maria Theodore and Lukman Sardi. Joining the franchise for the first time are Bryan Domani, Shindy Huang, Myesha Lin, Derby Romero and Luna Maya. Maya is also an executive producer on the film.
