President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi condemned a shooting at a church in Jordan’s Karak Governorate that killed at least seven people and injured dozens on Friday, 23 October, expressing Egypt’s solidarity with Jordan in a statement.

El-Sisi extended his condolences to King Abdullah II and the Jordanian people following the attack.

“I extend my sincere condolences and deepest sympathies to His Majesty King Abdullah II and the people of the sisterly Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan regarding the victims of the treacherous terrorist attack on a church in Karak Governorate,” El-Sisi said.

He also condemned the attack, describing it as an act that contradicted human values, and reaffirmed Egypt’s support for Jordan in confronting violence and terrorism.

The attack took place on Friday, 23 October, when gunmen opened fire on mourners attending a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud, in Jordan’s Karak Governorate, south of the capital, Amman.

According to Jordan’s Public Security Directorate, the shooting killed seven people and injured 34 others. Subsequent reports indicated that the number of casualties had risen.

Jordanian authorities launched an investigation and a search for those responsible. Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya described the attackers as extremists, although their identities and possible affiliations remained unclear, according to Reuters.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II condemned the attack, pledging severe punishment for those responsible and stressing that attempts to divide Jordanians would not succeed.

The King also visited injured victims receiving treatment at Prince Ali bin Al Hussein Military Hospital in Karak on Friday, 23 October. Following royal directives, the Jordanian Armed Forces arranged the transfer of several injured patients to Al Hussein Medical City for further treatment.

No group had claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of the initial reports.

Following the shooting, Jordan declared three days of national mourning in memory of the victims.
