Mandalika MotoGP delivers Rp5 trillion economic impact: Thohir

Indonesia has generated nearly Rp5 trillion (around US$279.5 million) in economic impact from hosting MotoGP races at the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, according to a government official.

"MotoGP is the real deal. Its economic impact has reached nearly Rp5 trillion," Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir said in Jakarta on Wednesday during the launch of a book examining the economic, tourism, and branding benefits of the Mandalika MotoGP.

He said the government would continue pursuing measures to maximize the benefits of hosting the premier motorcycle racing championship for both the national and local economies.

"We will step up our efforts. Our target this year is to attract 145,000 spectators," Thohir added.

To that end, the minister said his office would continue working closely with relevant institutions to advance Indonesia's sports tourism development agenda.

He added that maximizing the country's sports tourism potential is crucial to supporting President Prabowo Subianto's goal of accelerating economic growth to 8 percent.

"We will continue leveraging every available opportunity to deliver the best outcomes for the nation. One way is through coordination, execution, and the creation of events that can generate tangible benefits for sports tourism," he said.

Thohir stressed that strengthening Indonesia's sports tourism sector is crucial, as the country currently accounts for only around Rp39 trillion (over US$2 billion) of the global sports tourism market, which is worth an estimated Rp9,500 trillion.
