Banjarbaru, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - South Kalimantan recorded 4,926 forest and land fires affecting 27,202.97 hectares from January 1 to October 14, the provincial disaster agency said.

Head of the South Kalimantan Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Ronny Eka Saputra said the figures reflected monitoring and reports from all 13 districts and municipalities through October 14.

The agency also recorded 44,741 hotspots, based on the Forestry Ministry's SiPongi monitoring system and satellite imagery from NASA-MODIS, NASA-SNPP, and NASA-NOAA20.

“Banjar District had the highest number of fires, at 1,116, affecting 7,054.12 hectares,” Ronny said here Wednesday.

Banjarbaru followed with 919 fires affecting 3,343.03 hectares, while Tanah Laut District recorded 731 fires affecting 3,551.98 hectares.

Hulu Sungai Selatan recorded 556 fires affecting 4,209.05 hectares, followed by Barito Kuala with 467 fires across 3,276.82 hectares and Tapin with 356 fires affecting 2,700.78 hectares.

Tanah Bumbu recorded 232 fires affecting 725.85 hectares; Hulu Sungai Utara, 146 fires and 1,088.92 hectares; Balangan, 144 fires and 582.86 hectares; and Hulu Sungai Tengah, 92 fires and 297.49 hectares.

Banjarmasin recorded 69 fires affecting 24.36 hectares, Kotabaru 66 fires across 192.31 hectares, and Tabalong 32 fires affecting 155.43 hectares.

The agency continues to monitor fires and update its data to assess conditions across the province. Figures on incidents, affected land, and hotspots guide coordination with local governments and relevant agencies.

“We urge residents not to burn land, protect the environment and promptly report signs of fire to officials or relevant agencies to support prevention and control efforts,” Ronny said.
