Mapped: How many homes will get £100 energy bill payments in your London borough?

WEST END FINAL

Twenty million households in council tax bands A-D will get a £100 payment this winter to help deal with rising energy bills.

The Standard’s interactive map shows the boroughs where the highest percentage of residents will receive the payment - which will be paid directly into their bank accounts.

The announcement has prompted a surge in people checking their tax band to see if they qualify - with the service going down on Wednesday afternoon.

Across the country, the government estimates that support will reach 80% of households, including 83% of fuel-stressed households, and 88% of those in the bottom three income deciles.

In the capital, the scheme will help more than 1.9 million households, according to data from taxbandcheck.co.uk, with around 53% of London's 3.6 million households in Bands A-D.

However, The Standard’s analysis of London boroughs shows that the payments are not evenly distributed across the capital, and the share of eligible properties is lower in London and the South East compared to the north of England.

Just 33% of properties in Kensington & Chelsea will be eligible for the payment, compared to around 97% of homes in Barking & Dagenham.

Westminster and Richmond-upon-Thames follow Kensington and Chelsea with just 35% and 43% of homeowners eligible for the payment.

In Lewisham, 91% of homeowners are eligible for the payment, while 93% of homes in Newham will be pocketing the Chancellor’s handout this winter.

Council Tax bands in England are calculated based on a property's worth on April 1, 1991, with the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) assigning each residential property to one of eight main bands (A through H) based on these values.

In total, 181,400 (5%) of London households are in Band A, with 290,240 (8%) in Band B, 653,040 (18%) in Band C, and 798,160 (22%) in Band D.

Recipients can spend the cash landing in their bank account from January as they wish.
