Ogun to evacuate abandoned truck, piling rig on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency has begun moves to evacuate an abandoned piling rig and an accidented truck from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The development followed a PUNCH Metro report highlighting safety concerns raised by motorists and residents over the vehicles’ precarious positions around the Gideon Bus Stop and Kara-Ibafo areas of the expressway.

In a statement made available to PUNCH Metro on Tuesday, the spokesperson for TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the agency’s Deputy Commander in charge of the area had led an operation team to facilitate the quick evacuation of the vehicles.

Akinbiyi acknowledged that the amphibious crane, also described as a piling rig, and the accidented truck were parked in positions capable of endangering road users.

He said, “The DC led an operation team to ensure the quick evacuation of an amphibious crane and an accidented truck parked/abandoned at Magboro section, along Lagos/Ibadan Expressway inbound Lagos route.”

He added that TRACE operatives had been deployed to monitor the affected area pending the evacuation of the vehicles.

According to him, the Divisional Police Officer in Ibafo and the manager in charge of the piling rig had promised to expedite action on their removal.

PUNCH Metro had reported on Monday that a hydraulic piling rig had slipped off its lowbed trailer around the Gideon Bus Stop/Kara-Ibafo section, with its mast extending towards the road, while an accidented truck was left abandoned by the roadside.

Motorists who spoke to PUNCH Metro warned that the vehicles could obstruct traffic and force unsuspecting drivers to make sudden manoeuvres, particularly at night.

Akinbiyi assured that TRACE operatives would continue to monitor the affected axis until the vehicles were evacuated.
