NDC risks digging its own grave by repeating NPP’s mistakes – Fifi Kwetey
NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey has warned that the party risks digging its own grave if it repeats the mistakes voters rejected under the NPP.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, he urged the governing party to remain humble. He said its victory reflected the public's rejection of the NPP rather than any special entitlement to power.
“Now, so when you come and try to repeat what the NPP does, you are literally just digging your own grave.”
He warned members against treating party membership or government office as protection from accountability.
“Those days must be a thing of the past.”
Mr Kwetey said the party’s commitment to discipline would be tested most clearly by its willingness to punish its own members.
“The real punishment is the one meted out to somebody in the NDC.”
His warning comes amid the alleged World Cup visa scandal involving the National Sports Authority. Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah was suspended, and police are investigating the matter. He has denied wrongdoing.
The NDC has also faced scrutiny over its handling of sexual abuse allegations against Obuasi Senior High Technical School headmaster Zakaria Abdulai.
The party initially ordered him to withdraw from its Juaben constituency chairmanship contest. It then allowed him to proceed, citing fairness and the presumption of innocence, before directing him to step aside again. The allegations remained under investigation.
Mr Kwetey insisted that the NDC must hold itself to a higher standard. He linked that obligation to executions associated with the party’s political origins.
“So you can't be in NDC and expect that you do the same thing NPP does and expect the party to cover you. No, there's no cover-up.”
He said wrongdoing could occur in any institution. What mattered was how those in charge responded.
“But the way you deal with them is what matters.”
He also pledged that President John Mahama would not shield anyone, saying, “And I can tell you, the president is not going to cover anyone.”
For party members unwilling to uphold the required standards, his message was blunt: “If you are not capable of doing what is right. Other people would take that position and do it.”
