With The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt back in the spotlight after the recent launch of its remaster, fans are immersing themselves in the story of Geralt of Rivia, and his ward Ciri, once more.
Launching back in September, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered arrived on the PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2, offering a free upgrade for existing owners, as well as a brand-new skill tree, equipment transmogrification, enhanced ray tracing, and a brand-new Switch 2 port.
As such, it was not long before it was hitting review score records, with the remaster offering the magic of the original 2015 RPG but with much-needed improvements.
An Exciting Time To Be a Witcher Fan
As well as the launch of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, it remains an exciting time to be a fan of CD Projekt RED's The Witcher franchise. Not only are its current DLCs, Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone, now available to download for free to anybody who owns the current base game, but fans can also look forward to the third and final DLC, Songs of the Past, which arrives in the new year.
Of course, that is not even to mention The Witcher IV, which is currently in development, but what can fans enjoy in the meantime?
Well, if you just so happen to be a fan of board games AND The Witcher, then you will be pleased to learn that Go On Board and CD Projekt RED have teamed up to release a board game experience inspired by the beloved RPG series.
The Witcher TTRPG Experience Launches
Courtesy of Asmodee, The Witcher: Path of Destiny - Ronin is a board game that launched back in May, and allows players to take on the role of The Witcher characters as they explore an alternate world based on Japanese folklore. Featuring Geralt, Yennefer, Ciri, Yaskra, Vesemir, and Triss, the beloved characters will take on roles inspired by Japanese myth, and even wield accompanying weapons such as katanas and biwas.
However, even if you are not familiar with The Witcher book or video game series, you can still enjoy this standalone experience. This also means that you do not have to have played previous board games in the franchise, such as The Witcher: Path of Destiny.
As the official rules explain: "Ronin offers a competitive mode, but the new expansion puts quite a big emphasis on cooperation. In Ronin, players not only try their best to draft and play cards, but also to cooperate with each neighboring player to get the best shared bonuses.
When playing with two players, you will use the help of Automa - an additional player, managed by the game. In solo mode, we will play with two Automa. Automa plays cards and allows players to use cooperation tracks, but does not collect points by itself.
"In the Solo variant, the player chooses a character, neighboring characters and the difficulty level. The goal of the game is to collect Victory Points and achieve a special Victory Condition. The characters, as well as the difficulty level, give you a huge variability in this variant (hundreds of different starting layouts of the game)."
Suitable for one to five players, ages 14+, The Witcher: Path of Destiny - Ronin takes around 45 minutes to complete a campaign, and retails at $99.99. It is not the cheapest board game experience, but it will definitely make for the perfect Christmas present for The Witcher fans in your life.
