Netflix scored one of its biggest hits of 2026 with His & Hers. It’s been almost a year since His & Hers first dropped on the streamer, and it’s continuing to pull in massive viewing figures. While Netflix’s remake of Man on Fire came and went without making much of a splash, and Will Ferrell’s golf comedy The Hawk was widely panned by critics and audiences alike, His & Hers just keeps finding new fans.

Based on the 2020 novel of the same name by Alice Feeney, His & Hers premiered all six episodes on Netflix in January earlier this year. The mystery thriller plot follows a former news anchor who returns to her sleepy hometown to investigate a murder, both out of professional obligation as a journalist and because she has some unresolved stuff from her past to work through. When she gets there, she immediately butts heads with the detective assigned to the case, who just so happens to be her estranged husband.

Tessa Thompson plays the news reporter digging into the murder, while Jon Bernthal (who somehow managed to find time to shoot a six-part miniseries in between starring in the two biggest movies of the summer) plays the detective she’s reluctantly married to. Thompson and Bernthal both give great performances in their roles, and share spectacular on-screen chemistry that ensures their dynamic remains compelling through the whole series.

With moody filmmaking and twisty storytelling, His & Hers is one of the best TV thrillers of the year. The series took home two awards at the 2026 Black Reel TV Awards: Outstanding TV Movie or Limited Series for the show itself, and Outstanding Lead Performance in a TV Movie or Limited Series for Thompson. But why exactly was this show in particular so darn successful for Netflix?

Why His & Hers Was Such A Huge Hit For Netflix

Whereas something like the subversive superhero satire Jupiter’s Legacy or the lofty sci-fi epic 3 Body Problem is a massive swing for Netflix, His & Hers is right up the streamer’s alley. It’s no surprise that this show has been such a huge hit for Netflix — so popular with viewers and so enduring in the months since — because this kind of multi-part thriller is Netflix’s bread and butter.

His & Hers has big stars and a high-concept hook, and those are the two things that a thriller needs to succeed on Netflix. If there are recognizable stars like Thompson and Bernthal, who will make a potential viewer stop scrolling through thumbnails to see what’s up, and there’s an intriguing what-if scenario in the series’ description that will entice them to hit play (like, for example, what if an estranged husband and wife teamed up to solve a murder?), then you know a new smash hit is inbound.

These kinds of star-driven thrillers always do great on Netflix. Fool Me Once, The Beast in Me, I Will Find You, Below, Wayward, Missing You, Run Away, The Perfect Couple, Anatomy of a Scandal — the list goes on. It’s why the streamer is going so gung ho trying to turn the entire collected works of Harlan Coben into a bunch of miniseries.

The continued success of His & Hers has compounded an incredible year for Jon Bernthal. Shortly after His & Hers debuted on Netflix, Bernthal co-wrote and starred as Frank Castle in The Punisher: One Last Kill on Disney+, which set up Frank’s supporting role alongside Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day — and in between those two projects, Bernthal also played King Menelaus of Sparta in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, and made his Broadway debut as the Al Pacino character in a stage production of Dog Day Afternoon. 2026 may be the year of Zendaya or Tom Holland or Robert Pattinson, but don’t discount their lemme-tell-you-somethin’ Odyssey co-star.
