Practical Magic 2 Ending Explained: Who Dies, Who Gets Married, & What Happens to the Owens Curse

28 years after the now cult classic movie Practical Magic was first released, its sequel, Practical Magic 2, is finally here, and its ending packs a punch in terms of twists and massive reveals. So far, the movie hasn't necessarily been faring well in terms of reception. Reviews of Practical Magic 2 have called out a host of issues, from plot inconsistencies to drastic changes in the tone from scene to scene and more. Currently, the movie has a bleak 36% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes; audience scores have yet to be tallied by the site.

Even so, the film is plenty of fun to watch, with stars Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock unsurprisingly proving to be a delight on screen and newcomers Joey King and Maisie Williams, who are stepping into the roles of Sally's daughters, Kylie and Antonia, managing to keep pace. The movie also consistently captures some of the same magic of the original at various points, which is what many fans will be looking for (and willing to overlook other issues for, no doubt).

In addition to these positives, Practical Magic 2 does give audiences a massive ending, with some major character deaths, a significant update to the Owens women's family curse, and some truly surprising conclusions for the main characters' stories, especially for Sally and Kylie, who are the primary focus of the movie. Here's a roundup of some of the biggest aspects of Practical Magic 2's ending, as well as an exploration of what could be next for the beloved franchise after this 28-year hiatus and a brand-new big screen comeback.

The End of the Owens Women's Curse Explained

One of the most central concepts of Practical Magic is the fact that the Owens women—including main characters Sally and Gillian, but also their ancestors as well—are cursed, as anyone who romantically loves them will die. In the first half of Practical Magic, that curse was on full display, as Sally and her daughters suffered the tragic loss of Sally's first husband (and the girls' father), Michael.

Practical Magic 2 wasted no time making it clear that the curse was still going strong, as the very beginning of the movie confirmed that Sally's second husband and the person she ends up with at the end of Practical Magic, Gary, had also died soon after. This also, unsurprisingly, ends up being a crucial part of the plot, as Sally's youngest daughter, Kylie, reveals that she is in love with a man named Gideon, only for him to be struck with a car, just as Michael was.

Thankfully, unlike Michael, Gideon survived this accident, although he was in the hospital in a coma, and he was clearly on the brink of death. The main focus of the plot becomes Kylie discovering that she and her family members are witches and traveling to their home country of England to try and find a way to break the curse and save Gideon. Unfortunately for Kylie, the person she believes is helping her, Tom Lockland, is only out for her power and isn't actually there to break any curse.

In the end, it is revealed that only one thing can break the curse, and that's a witch willingly giving up her life to do so. In an act of true love and sacrifice, the beloved character Franny, an aunt to Sally and Gillian and a great aunt to Kylie and Antonia, decides to do exactly that. The end of the movie then confirms that the curse actually was broken, as both Sally and Kylie are shown to be in very happy relationships at the end.

This also raises massive questions about what the future could hold for the Owens women, as this is the very first time that Sally, Gillian, Antonia, and Kylie will not be limited in love by this curse.

Everyone Who Dies in Practical Magic 2

There are several deaths in Practical Magic 2, some of which are (arguably) deserved, and others were genuinely heartbreaking. As mentioned, one of the most significant deaths in the movie is Franny's, although she sadly found her death a bit easier to embrace because she was joining her beloved sister, Jet, who died towards the beginning of the movie. Both women were pillars of the Owens family, and both were, of course, devastating to Sally, Gillian, Kylie, and Antonia, but this also marked a new chapter for the family, with Sally at one point even saying, "We're the aunts now."

In addition to these fan-favorite sisters passing on in Practical Magic 2, and the death of Sally's second husband Gary being confirmed at the beginning of the movie (although he's never actually shown on screen), the only other prominent death is that of the villain, Tom, whose role in the film is a bit unexpected, for various reasons. For one, he was revealed to be a very distant relative of the Owens women, as he is also related to Maria Owens but as a descendant of a child who was born out of wedlock (the 'illegitimate' child of Lord Lockwood).

For another, and in terms of the narrative, Tom is a bit of an odd villain because he doesn't actually show up until about halfway through the movie, and he's defeated rather quickly. However, it is still a profound moment in the story, as Kylie, Sally, and Gillian all must work together to defeat him. He then also has a pretty startling death, being effectively disintegrated at the very location where their mutual ancestor had been burned at the stake for being a witch.

Who Does Sally Owens End Up With?

Sally's love story is tragic, which is true of many Owens women, but with Sally, audiences have seen her fall in love twice on screen, only for both men to die. That only made it all the sweeter to see Sally finally get the love story that she deserves. In the movie, Sally and Gillian both meet Professor Ian Wright, who is supposed to help them find Kylie after she has run off to London to break the curse. At first, Sally is very annoyed by Ian, but that is often the basis for a great romance in movies.

That certainly proves true for these two, who end up falling for each other despite the curse and the fact that they are constantly bickering. However, when Sally leaves London, she refuses to even kiss Ian because, in light of the curse, it could only end in pain for everyone involved. Thankfully, after Franny sacrifices her life to break the curse, Sally is able to truly commit to Ian, in a relationship that will hopefully last now that he won't be doomed to die.

What's Next for Kylie and Antonia

Although Practical Magic 2 was still primarily focused on Sally and Gillian, as could be expected and was understandable, part of the story was also about looking to the next generation, and in this case, that's Sally's two daughters, Antonia and Kylie. At first, Antonia and Kylie have no idea that they are witches, as their mom erases their memories at the beginning of the movie, before a time jump of about a decade into the future (another change from the end of Practical Magic, when they were aware of their family history).

Throughout the movie, Kylie in particular becomes not just aware of the fact that she is a witch but also increasingly talented and confident in her powers, setting up the possibility that she could become a very strong witch in the future. She is also the first Owens woman we've seen start a marriage on screen that isn't doomed to end in tragedy, as she gets married at the end of the movie, once the curse has already been broken and Gideon has woken up from his coma and fully recovered.

Antonia is less prominent in the movie, which also means that her ending is more open to interpretation. She was confirmed at the beginning of the movie to be studying to become a neurosurgeon, and what we see of her work in the medical field certainly suggests she's well on her way to hitting that goal.

In terms of romance, Antonia doesn't explore a relationship on screen; however, there are several moments where it seems clear that she is interested in women, which is something that is explored in the books but was not in the movie. Potentially, that could be something to be explored in a possible Practical Magic 3.

How Practical Magic 2 Sets Up a Possible Sequel

At present, no announcement has been made for Practical Magic 3, and considering 28 years passed between Practical Magic and Practical Magic 2, it could be quite some time before we ever get such an announcement, if one is ever coming. However, Practical Magic 2 does set up a possible sequel in myriad ways. For one, now that Sally has found Ian and has an actual shot at love, free of any curse, there's little doubt that audiences would want to see that.

Likewise, Kylie's brand-new marriage and burgeoning witch powers mean that there is so much more to explore in her story, and it's easy to imagine that she could make a return to the franchise as a central character. In fact, a future sequel focused more heavily on the younger generation would make sense, as Antonia, too, offers so much more to be explored narratively, from her career goals and love interests to what she will do as she learns more about her own powers.

Yet, perhaps the biggest reason to push for Practical Magic 3 is the fact that Gillian's story in particular doesn't feel over yet. She is a major part of the movie, yes, but we don't actually see a lot of character development for her. In this movie, unlike in Practical Magic, she feels much more like a supporting character to her sister's story than her own woman. Gillian, like all the Owens women, deserves love, and she should get her happy ending too.

Therefore, Practical Magic 2 is hopefully not the end—and will hopefully not be an indication of how long we may have to wait for Practical Magic 3.
