After a slow start to its campaign, Karnataka will look to carry the momentum from a resounding innings win over Tripura into its clash against Assam at the ACA Stadium in Barsapara on Monday.
Karnataka sits fourth in Elite Group B with nine points after three rounds despite pocketing the bonus point last time out, as a result of consecutive draws against Andhra and Saurashtra in its first two games.
It’s not exactly been the smoothest of rides for the Southern heavyweight so far, but it will look to find a consistent winning formula going forward, starting with Assam, one of the weaker sides in the group.
Shreyas Gopal, the third-highest wicket taker last season who is fresh off a five-wicket haul against Tripura, will continue to lead the side in Smaran Ravichandran’s absence.
With senior stalwarts K.L. Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Prasidh Krishna and Smaran away on national duty, Karnataka has had the window to try new faces and test its bench strength — four players have made their First-Class debut across the batting and bowling departments, including Manvanth Kumar, Aneeshwar Gautam, Rohan Patil, Ritesh Bhatkal.
The batting has been a mixed bag. Veteran Karun Nair and the young core have been amongst the runs but have lacked intent, as head coach Vinay Kumar rightly pointed out against Tripura. Vinay will hope his willow wielders can shed the timidness and be more proactive in the coming games.
More will be expected from Mayank Agarwal, who is yet to score a half-century this season. Agarwal’s opening partner Rohan has been more prolific in comparison, with one 50 plus score in two games.
Karun leads the run charts with 305 runs, including a fifty and a hundred, while the rest of the middle order, comprising K.V. Aneesh, wicket-keeper K.S. Shrijith, and Aneeshwar have looked assured at the crease.

Aneeshwar’s elegance was on full display against Tripura as the 23-year-old southpaw scored his maiden FC century in just his second Ranji game. Aneesh has been used as a floater and adapted well to the role, but needs to start converting his half-centuries into hundreds to have a bigger impact.
The bowling attack has shuffled depending on the conditions on offer. Against Saurashtra on a true wicket, Karnataka fielded three pacers but switched to a three-spin attack on a slow surface against Tripura.
If the 2025 South Africa Test and the Assam-Tripura game from earlier in the season, the last two red-ball games at the Barsapara Stadium, are anything to go by, expect spinners to be a threat.
Shreyas, along with Shikhar Shetty and Ritesh will look to extract maximum returns in that case.
Vyshak Vijaykumar has spearheaded the pace attack, while Abhilesh Shetty, Manvanth, and Vidwath Kaverappa have played the supporting act. Manvanth has been especially impressive, having also showcased his batting ability with a scintillating hundred against Saurashtra.
Kaverappa missed the first game due to injury but took a four-wicket haul against Saurashtra, reaffirming his credentials as one of the best fast bowlers in the Indian domestic circuit.
Assam, on the other hand will relish returning to home conditions but will need to punch well above its weight to come away with a positive result.
The Northeast team is only two points behind Karnataka and sits only one place below its opponent in the points table. But its season so far has been defined more by individual performances than a collective team effort.
Assam started started with a draw away from home against Punjab. The side then defeated Tripura by an innings but succumbed to a heavy defeat against Saurashtra in its last match.
Captain Denish Das and the experienced Sibsankar Roy have done the heavy lifting with the bat, while Mukhthar Hussain, Hridip Deka, and Mohit Thakur have combined for more than 25 wickets in three matches. However, it will need greater synergy if it is to challenge Karnataka and walk away with at least a point.
As for the weather, there is no threat of rain on all four days of the match. The November climate in Guwahati has nevertheless altered the schedule, with the day’s play set to begin at 8:30 AM and conclude at 4:00 PM due to early sunset.
