Godzilla Minus Zero Teases A Major Change To Ghidorah's Powers After 62 Years

Although the newest version of King Ghidorah has yet to appear in the flesh, there's already a sign that Toho may be making a significant change to how he fights in Godzilla Minus Zero. Without revealing his design, the studio confirmed that Godzilla's three-headed archenemy will be the villain of the upcoming sequel to Godzilla Minus One.

The new trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero was seemingly teasing a renewed conflict between humanity and Godzilla, before one character could be heard saying, "it's not Godzilla we're talking about." This cleverly coincided with the sound of a roar that could clearly be identified as the call of King Ghidorah. His inclusion adds deeper meaning to the title, given that Invasion of Astro Monster designated him as "Monster Zero" in 1965.

As for what to expect from the next take on King Ghidorah, that's open to speculation for the time being. Considering that his roar is recognizable and that portrayals of Ghidorah have been largely consistent over the years, it's fair to believe that he'll be very close to what Godzilla fans remember from his previous movie appearances. But that's not to say the movie won't make some changes. In fact, one significant alteration to the character may have already been hinted at in the marketing.

Is Godzilla Minus Zero Changing How Ghidorah's Gravity Beams Work?

In both trailers, debris can be seen suspended in midair, with a mysterious blue energy emanating all around it. Since the color resembles the aesthetic of Godzilla's atomic breath, it's at least possible that these shots are meant to represent some sort of new power that Godzilla is going to receive, post-regeneration. An alternative, and arguably more likely, explanation, is that this instead pertains to King Ghidorah's role in the movie.

After all, Ghidorah's signature attack is called the "gravity beam." Across all his appearances, dating all the way back to his debut in 1964's Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, Ghidorah emits blasts of yellow lightning from his three mouths. Of course, that description doesn't really fit what was shown in the Godzilla Minus Zero trailer. But it's important to note that the name of the ability doesn't accurately describe what it does either. Traditionally, gravity beams are a purely offensive attack that Ghidorah uses to shock Godzilla and inflict destruction on his surroundings.

In only one movie did the gravity beam actually live up to his name, even if it was only briefly. In Godzilla: Final Wars, a much stronger relative of Monster Zero - known as Keizer Ghidorah - hit Godzilla with his gravity beams, which propelled Godzilla's body into the air. That's been the extent of the ability's effects on gravity on the big screen, but that may change when Godzilla Minus Zero arrives in theaters.

Keizer Ghidorah is commonly regarded as a separate monster in Godzilla lore, as it has been confirmed that Keizer Ghidorah and King Ghidorah are two different entities in the world of Final Wars.

What A Power Change For Ghidorah Could Mean For Godzilla Minus Zero

If the Godzilla Minus Zero trailer is indeed indicative of Ghidorah's powers getting an upgrade, this could have a serious impact on the action, and in turn, allow for a fresh take on the classic formula of a Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah battle. For Godzilla, the challenge of beating Ghidorah usually calls for him to win physical clashes, withstand Ghidorah's attempts to bombard him with lightning, and keep the kaiju out of the air. If antigravity becomes a major new weapon in Ghidorah's arsenal, that could drastically change the dynamic.

Theoretically, having this power could enable Ghidorah to weaponize all manner of debris against Godzilla, and he may even be able to lift Godzilla himself into the air with this ability, the latter of which was a feat only Keizer Ghidorah had accomplished previously. If that's true, that may be the real reason Godzilla was shown falling in the Godzilla Minus Zero trailer, as opposed to him being dropped from the sky (as Ghidorah has done in the past). All things considered, Godzilla could be about to face the strongest version of King Ghidorah ever.
