Mohun Bagan Super Giant will look to make home advantage count when it hosts Chennaiyin FC at the Salt Lake Stadium in its first home fixture of the 13th edition of the Indian Super League on Monday.
The Mariners head into the contest with renewed confidence after securing a 2-1 victory over SC Delhi in their previous outing, bouncing back from a 0-1 defeat to NorthEast United FC in the season opener in Guwahati. Head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis will be keen for his side to build on that momentum and reproduce last season’s 2-0 home victory over Chennaiyin.
Mohun Bagan’s response against SC Delhi highlighted its ability to recover from an early setback and find a way to secure the maximum points. The opening defeat to NorthEast United also served as a reminder that it cannot afford lapses in concentration against well-organised opponents.
Mohun Bagan’s strength lies in its technical quality arising primarily from the depth of its Indian roster. Apuia and Sahal Abdul Samad can help dictate the tempo in midfield, while Liston Colaco and Manvir Singh’s pace and ability to create chances from wide areas offer an additional attacking dimension. Mohun Bagan’s attacking plans could be affected by injuries to key foreign forwards Jamie Maclaren and Miguel Figueira. Dilmperis said a final decision on their availability would be made after Sunday’s training session. The challenge will be to maintain the attacking threat without compromising their defensive balance.

Chennaiyin FC also faces an uphill task after collecting just one point from its opening two matches. Following a 1-1 draw against FC Goa and a 2-0 defeat to Bengaluru FC, Clifford Miranda’s side will be eager to revive the ISL campaign. Despite their modest return, Chennaiyin have shown that they can create opportunities. The team’s attacking intent was evident against Bengaluru, when it registered 20 attempts on goal but failed to score. While the volume of chances suggests an ability to threaten opponents, its inability to convert those opportunities has emerged as a major concern. The Chennaiyin attackers need to show better precision and decision-making in the final third if they are to trouble Mohun Bagan.
French playmaker Madih Talal is expected to be central to Chennaiyin’s creative efforts, with Brazilian forward Ramon Tanque leading the attack. Talal’s ability to link midfield with the forward line could be particularly important in unlocking Mohun Bagan’s defence, while Irfan Yadwad’s pace offers the visitor a potential outlet on the counter-attack. Defensively, Chennaiyin will need greater discipline and organisation than it showed in the defeat to Bengaluru.
With home support behind them and confidence restored by their latest victory, the Mariners will start with the aim of controlling proceedings and extending their winning momentum. On the other hand Chennaiyin will be determined to address its shortcomings in front of goal and make the counter-attacking opportunities count.
