Stuart Fails to Save the Universe season 2: Release date speculation and latest news

It looks like Stuart Bloom will be getting some more time to try – and most likely fail – to save the universe.

The Big Bang Theory spin-off Stuart Fails to Save the Universe has been renewed for a second season, meaning that Stuart (Kevin Sussman) and his pals will be navigating the multiverse once more in an attempt to prevent the end of the world(s).

“We’re delighted with how this hilarious, genre-bending show from Chuck [Lorre], Zak [Penn], and Bill [Prady] has connected with the audience, both devotees of The Big Bang Theory and new fans alike,” Amy Gravitt, Head of HBO & HBO Max Comedy Series said when the renewal was announced in August. “Along with everyone else, we can’t wait to see the worlds they conjure for these beloved characters next season.”

In the first season, currently on HBO Max, it turned out that Stuart, the comic book owner from The Big Bang Theory, had accidentally broken a device built by Sheldon and Leonard that set the multiverse into a tailspin.

Another version of Stuart visited to tell him of the quest he had to undertake to put things right, and with the help of girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), geologist pal Bert (Brian Posehn), and the exceedingly reluctant and annoying Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie), Stuart travelled to different parts of the multiverse, including a universe ruled by AI, one where humanity has descended from cows, and another where Bert was a powerful magician.

Along the way, the quartet ran into alternate versions of some familiar faces, including Raj (Kunal Nayyar), Penny (Kaley Cuoco), Bernadette (Melissa Rauch), Wil Wheaton and Amy (Mayim Bialik). However, the three male leads of The Big Bang Theory – Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Howard (Simon Helberg) – have yet to make an appearance.

No release date has been announced for the second season as yet, although co-creator and writer Bill Prady confirmed earlier this month that writing the new season had begun.

The final episode of season 1 airs on HBO Max in the UK on Friday 25 September, and we would expect a second season to arrive in summer 2027.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe season 2 plot speculation: What could happen?

The final episode of the first season ends on a cliffhanger that we won't spoil here, but needless to say, Stuart has yet to save the universe so there is plenty of scope for him, Denise, Kripke and Bert to have more multiverse adventures in the second season.

Many fans are wondering whether the second season could mean cameos from The Big Bang Theory stars who didn't appear in season 1. Christine Baranski, who played Leonard's mother, made a brief appearance as herself in the first season, but we have yet to see the return of Leonard himself, or Howard, Sheldon or fan favourites Mary – AKA Sheldon's mother (Laurie Metcalf) – and Leslie Winkle (Sara Gilbert).

Jim Parsons has previously stated he doesn't want to return to the role of Sheldon again, saying on the All Out with Jon Dean podcast that he "wouldn't do it again." However, Johnny Galecki, who plays Leonard, has recently returned to acting after an extended break so could possibly return, while Simon Helberg, who plays Howard, recently told Screen Rant, "there's no plan for Howard to come back at the moment," which fans are taking as a 'maybe' rather than a 'no'.
