A whopping eight Friday the 13th movies were released in the 1980s, followed by an additional six movies over the following 19 years, but, criminally, a new Jason Voorhees slasher has not slashed its way into theaters in 17 years. While the wait for Jason’s big screen return continues, A24 and Peacock team up for Crystal Lake, a prequel series that adds genuine tragedy to the eventual hockey mask-wearing serial killer’s story and intriguing new layers to Pamela Voorhees’ backstory.

Making its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival with a screening of its first two episodes, Crystal Lake takes place before the events of the first Friday the 13th movie and follows single mother Pamela Voorhees (Linda Cardellini) as she grieves the passing of her young, sickly son Jason (Callum Vinson) after he tragically drowned at Camp Crystal Lake. As she grapples with the unimaginable loss, Pamela’s life is shaken up even further upon the arrival of two strangers with ties to her mysterious past.

Crystal Lake Intriguingly Teases Jason And Pamela Voorhees’ Origins

The history of horror cinema often overlooks that Friday the 13th, in addition to being a classic of the slasher genre, also operates as a whodunnit. Within that murder mystery, it is not Jason Voorhees who is responsible for the deaths of all the camp counselors, but rather his mother, Pamela Voorhees. Every subsequent installment of the franchise positioned Jason as the central antagonist, but the original film only featured Jason in a single, shocking jump-scare at the very end, which followed the truly unexpected reveal that the unassuming, modestly dressed mother was the killer all along.

The new series from showrunner Brad Caleb Kane respects the oft-overlooked nature of the franchise’s first installment by shedding light on a fascinating character bafflingly under-explored until now. Although perhaps revealing some of its cards a tad too early, Crystal Lake intrigues as it offers newfound insights about the origins of Pamela and Jason Voorhees, insights that retrospectively may change the way in which one watches the Friday the 13th movies. Usually, unraveling the origins of a horror icon is a bad idea (case in point: Rob Zombie’s Halloween), but, so far, Kane’s series appears to strike a healthy balance between honoring the original films and making its prequel story feel like a necessary addition to the franchise.

Crystal Lake also pays homage to the films in other, more detail-oriented ways. The makeup design that brings young Jason to life harkens back to the unmasked killer from franchise films, in particular Friday the 13th: Part III. The writers also pepper in fun Easter eggs to the franchise, while the production design team clearly goes to great lengths to recreate the visual language and aesthetic of Camp Crystal Lake from the original movie.

Crystal Lake Strikes An Unexpectedly Strong Emotional Chord

In depicting Pamela’s touching relationship with her son and subsequent turmoil upon his passing, Crystal Lake strikes an emotional chord that none of the prior Friday the 13th movies come close to hitting. No stranger to playing mother figures, Linda Cardellini brings incredible warmth and kindness to her scenes with young Jason, who is played with a heartbreaking innocence by Callum Vinson. Cardellini plays the role of a grieving mother with profound emotion, making the audience live, breathe, and feel the anguish dominating her every second of every day.

Crystal Lake strikes an emotional chord that none of the prior Friday the 13th movies come close to hitting.

When things inevitably get bloodier for Pamela and Crystal Lake, Cardellini, partially due to writing that lacks the necessary nuance, seems unfazed by the violence that has suddenly come into her life. While it is admittedly too early in the season’s run to cast too much judgment on the discrepancy between Pamela’s exposure to violence and Cardellini’s performance given the reveals likely to come, for now, the transition (or lack thereof) in performance raises an eyebrow.

Crystal Lake Parallels Bates Motel

Although it’s early days for Crystal Lake, comparisons to the Psycho prequel series Bates Motel are rather glaring after the first two episodes. Both series take place in remote towns and have first episodes punctuated by an act of violence that kicks off a chain of events that threaten to expose the leading mother character’s shady background.

The parallels between the two shows are not necessarily a bad thing, however. It is clear that Crystal Lake will diverge further and further away from Bates Motel as the episodes progress and, until then, Kane’s series borrows from a solid horror prequel series that was a few years ahead of its time.

Crystal Lake Stumbles With Its Second Episode

After a gripping, unexpectedly emotional first episode, Crystal Lake stumbles with a slower-paced and more uneventful second episode. Coupled with the aforementioned oddity with Cardellini’s performance, the sophomore outing fails to capitalize on the pressure built up so effectively in the first episode by pivoting away from Crystal Lake and toward a strange and decidedly less interesting contained episode.

Missteps with its second episode aside, Crystal Lake certainly compels with its initial episodes due to a gut-wrenching turn from Linda Cardellini, a stirring examination of maternal grief, and seeds of intriguing reveals about Jason and Pamela Voorhees’ origins.
