GFA labels Björkegren ‘best-performing coach’ to justify Black Stars appointment

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has defended the appointment of Kim Lars Björkegren as interim Black Stars coach, describing him as the “best-performing coach” among the country’s various national teams.

The Swedish coach, who is in charge of the Black Queens, has been handed the men’s senior national team role on a temporary basis for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Somalia.

A five-member committee recommended Björkegren for the position, with Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram serving as his assistants, following Carlos Queiroz’s departure from the GFA.

“The committee looked within and settled on Kim Lars Björkegren because he is the best-performing coach in terms of the national teams, so I don’t think it will be a challenge for him,” GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum told Asempa FM.

“The committee felt we have to look at someone who worked with Carlos Queiroz, and it is obviously Godwin Attram,” he said.

“Ibrahim Tanko is the best coach in the country at the moment. He is the defending champion of the Ghana Premier League and currently sits at the top of the league,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Black Queens are set to face Ecuador, Uzbekistan and Papua New Guinea in the World Cup play-off tournament, which is reportedly scheduled to take place in Morocco on November 28, 13 days after Ghana’s second qualifier against Somalia.

Asked whether Björkegren’s appointment could affect the Black Queens’ preparations for the play-offs, Asante Twum said: “We are aware that the Black Queens will prepare next month for the World Cup play-offs, but I don’t think that his appointment will be a hindrance.”
