Bogor govt finds 23 firms suspected of polluting Cileungsi River

Bogor, W Java (ANTARA) - Bogor district officials in West Java have identified 23 companies suspected of discharging wastewater that violates regulations into the Cileungsi River, following an investigation of about 176 companies.

Bogor District Head Rudy Susmanto said the investigation lasted several weeks after residents reported repeated pollution in the river.

"Of the 176 companies, about 23 were identified, including multinational and national firms, with oversight falling under both central and Bogor district authorities," Rudy said here Saturday.

He said the investigation team had collected evidence, including photographs, videos, and water samples from several drainage outlets leading into the Cileungsi River.

Rudy said tests on several samples showed the wastewater exceeded permitted limits.

"Based on data, evidence and facts, including photographs, videos, and water samples from several pipes along the Cileungsi River, we found wastewater levels above normal limits," he said.

The findings became more apparent as the river's flow fell sharply amid low rainfall in recent days, exposing several industrial-area drainage outlets during the river inspection.

Rudy said the Bogor district government had not halted operations at the 23 companies. Instead, it acted against outlets suspected of discharging wastewater above permitted standards.

"We closed several wastewater outlets that exceeded water-quality standards and were suspected of polluting the Cileungsi River," he said.

The district government gave the companies 10 days to improve their wastewater treatment systems. Its Environment Agency will also provide free assistance during the improvement process.

For companies regulated and supervised by the central government, Rudy said Bogor officials would coordinate with the Environment Ministry and other relevant ministries to follow up on the findings.

He said the measures were intended to keep economic activity running while protecting the environment and communities that depend on the Cileungsi River.

"We must protect the environment together. The Cileungsi River is a source of raw water not only for Bogor, but also Bekasi and several other areas," Rudy said.
