The Odyssey's journey has taken it further at the box office than any Universal movie has gone before.

The new adaptation of Homer's epic poem, which was written and directed by Christopher Nolan, is a runaway smash hit. During the first eight weeks of its run, 2026's The Odyssey has rocketed past the $1.5 billion milestone worldwide, becoming Nolan's highest-grossing directorial effort both unadjusted and adjusted for inflation. Partially thanks to its reputation as the first film in history to be shot entirely on IMAX film cameras, it has also broken the all-time box office record for an IMAX release.

The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as Odysseus opposite an ensemble cast that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Elliot Page, and Charlize Theron.

Universal Pictures has taken to X to reveal that The Odyssey has now become their "highest-grossing film of all time." The Odyssey is projected to end its ninth weekend in theaters by hitting a cumulative global gross of $1.684 billion, which sees it usurping the 2015 smash hit Jurassic World ($1.677 billion) on the studio's all-time chart (not adjusted for inflation). In doing so, it has become the 12th highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide, also surpassing the global gross of Disney's 2019 live-action hit The Lion King ($1.662 billion).
