Ed Davey retains Liberal Democrat leadership as challenge collapses after marathon meeting
Sir Ed Davey has survived a potential challenge to his leadership of the Liberal Democrats after an expected effort to remove him failed to occur on Tuesday evening.
Lib Dem MP Charlie Maynard stepped down from his frontbench post last week, with reports indicating his resignation was designed to spark a vote of confidence in Sir Ed’s leadership.
Following an extended meeting of the parliamentary party on Tuesday, no ballot took place, allowing Sir Ed to stay in position.
Deputy party leader Daisy Cooper said: "There is overwhelming support for Ed in the parliamentary party and a real sense that we need to come together as a group.

"We are passionate about the crucial role we play in stopping the Conservatives and Reform UK from forming the most right-wing government in our history.
"We will continue to put together a platform for the next general election focusing on the issues that matter most to people across our country."
The departure of Mr Maynard came amid reported discontent regarding the party’s lack of progress since the 2024 election, when it won a record 72 MPs.
The Liberal Democrats have made minimal polling progress since that vote, with a recent YouGov survey ranking the party at 11% – marginally under its 2024 share.
