Margot Robbie’s 2023 Barbie movie wasn’t just a summer blockbuster hit; it was a cultural phenomenon that took the world by storm. From fans dressing up as Barbie and Ken to see the movie to restaurants serving Barbie-themed food and the legendary Barbenheimer memes flooding the internet, Barbie became an event, not just a movie. While there is still hope that Robbie will return to reclaim her iconic role, news of a new Barbie era has arrived, and it already sounds epic.

Barbie (2023) is best described as a fantasy comedy that dropped fans into the fantastical world of Barbieland before following Barbie and Ken into the real world. But now, rather than sticking to this fantasy-comedy genre, Barbie and Ken are set to embark on a sci-fi adventure in a brand-new series coming in 2027.

Dark Horse recently announced that Barbie: Together in Time will launch on February 10, 2027, with the series slated to run for a total of six issues. This is far from the first time Barbie has brought her adventures to the pages of comics. However, this release is particularly notable because it is the first new Barbie comic series since Margot Robbie’s portrayal of the iconic character. The series will also give the franchise a sci-fi twist.

For Barbie: Together in Time, fans can look forward to an A-tier creative team featuring critically acclaimed writer Ben Kahn (Renegade Rule; Mr. Muffins: Defender of the Stars), artist Natalie Nardozza, colorist Heather Breckel, and letterer Frank Cvetkovic. Upon its February release, the 32-page first issue will be available for $4.99, with fans able to find the official synopsis below:

When Barbie and Ken surprise Barbie at her science internship, they’re not expecting the brush-off they receive. Hurt, Ken wanders into a supercollider test run—and disappears! With the help of their mentor Dr. von Science, Barbie and Barbie must follow Ken’s time energy to different places and eras to collect it and restore their friend to the present. But accessing the time energy won’t be simple!

Based on this synopsis, we can confirm that the series will have a strong sci-fi influence, with a plot revolving around a science experiment gone awry and the ensuing quest that sees Dr. von Science, Barbie, and Barbie following “Ken’s time energy to different places and eras” to collect it and restore their friend to the present.

While it will be hard to top Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s portrayals of Barbie and Ken, the premise sounds like non-stop fun. It will likely draw in both younger and older audiences, much like the Barbie movie. It’s also worth keeping in mind that plenty of comic book stories go on to inspire movies, such as James Gunn’s Supergirl, which is based on Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. That said, there is always the possibility that Barbie: Together in Time could inspire a future Barbie movie!

Barbie: Together in Time #1 from Dark Horse will be available to read on February 10, 2027.
