What Went Wrong For Brock Purdy As The San Francisco 49ers’ Unbeaten Run Ended In Atlanta?

Perfect seasons rarely end quietly. The San Francisco 49ers learned that in Atlanta on Sunday, where a 29-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons ended their unbeaten start at six games. Quarterback Brock Purdy threw two interceptions, the offense gave the ball away four times in total, and a thin receiving group never found its rhythm. Michael Penix Jr. threw three touchdown passes for the Falcons, and the defense did the rest. Now San Francisco heads into the bye week at 6-1 with a long, frustrating injury list and a few hard questions to answer before November arrives.

Why Brock Purdy's Interceptions Hurt The San Francisco 49ers Most

San Francisco led 14-3 early in the second quarter. Then the game turned.

Brock Purdy's first interception came in the third quarter with the 49ers trailing 19-14. He rolled right, hesitated between throwing the ball away and testing the sideline, and chose a risky throw over the middle. Falcons safety Jessie Bates III made the catch. "So gotta learn from that the tough way," Purdy said.

The second one sealed it. San Francisco trailed by six with four minutes left when Atlanta showed blitz, then dropped linebacker Kendal Daniels into coverage. Purdy never saw him. "It was good play calling by them and good execution by the linebacker," Purdy said.

He still finished 27 of 40 for 288 yards. The numbers look fine. The two decisions behind the interceptions do not.

What The San Francisco 49ers Must Fix During The Week 8 Bye

The roster problem is easy to see. Mike Evans sat out, and Christian McCaffrey missed almost two quarters with a leg issue. "My leg just died on me," McCaffrey said.

That left Purdy with only four active receivers: Brandin Cooks, Jacob Cowing, Jordan Watkins and Christian Kirk. Running back Kaelon Black ran 30 yards for a touchdown, but he and Jordan James both fumbled. Short on weapons, the playbook shrank.

George Kittle kept the tone honest. "Losing sucks," he said. He also pointed to the good news, saying, "I think it's going to spark a bigger fire underneath us."

The timing helps. San Francisco hopes Demarcus Robinson returns after the bye, and Evans may follow. The schedule then offers the Las Vegas Raiders and the Dallas Cowboys. A healthy offense and a cleaner Purdy could turn this loss into a footnote.
