Miley Cyrus’ new album ‘Bass Persuades’ makes US chart history as biggest drop from Number One debut

Miley Cyrus’ new album ‘Bass Persuades’ has made US chart history after suffering the biggest-ever second-week drop for an album that debuted at Number One.

The singer – who now goes simply by Miley – released her 10th studio album last week and it entered the Billboard 200 at the summit with 61,000 equivalent album units, marking her first US Number One since 2013’s ‘Bangerz’.

A week later, however, it has plummeted 156 places to Number 157 – the biggest drop in Billboard 200 history for an album immediately following a Number One debut.

The only steeper falls were Bon Jovi’s 2016 album ‘This House Is Not For Sale’, which returned to Number One in 2018 after being bundled with concert tickets, before falling to Number 169 the following week, and Travis Scott’s 2014 mixtape ‘Days Before Rodeo’, which hit Number One a decade after its original release, before disappearing from the Billboard 200 entirely the next week.

‘Bass Persuades’ arrived on September 18 through Atlantic Records, just weeks after Miley announced the album alongside two Hollywood Bowl shows.

The announcement also confirmed that she would henceforth be billed simply as Miley, dropping ‘Cyrus’ from her professional name. Her father Billy Ray Cyrus later backed the change, saying: “I always called my little girl Miley. Just… Miley.”

The record followed 2025’s ‘Something Beautiful’ and its collaborators include Model/Actriz, while much of the record explores her relationship with fiancé Maxx Morando.

In NME’s three-star review, ‘Bass Persuades’ was described as “leaner, more direct and more obviously built for the dancefloor” than its predecessor, while retaining the “eccentric streak” of Miley’s recent work.

The review added: “Not every track persuades, but nearly two decades into her recording career, Cyrus has nothing to prove and knows it.”

Elsewhere on this week’s Billboard 200, Taylor Swift returned to Number One following the release of ‘The Life Of A Showgirl: The Encore’, while Tinashe’s ‘Popstar’ debuted at Number Six, giving her the first US Top 10 album of her career.

As for Miley, she recently shared a personal tribute to her godmother Dolly Parton, following her death at the age of 80. Miley recalled that one of their final conversations had been about “music and metamorphosis”.

“What I KNOW is Dolly would want me to feel it, write a song about it, and then continue on and be strong,” she wrote. “I have an angel by my side. I always have.”
