DIY SOS viewers beg BBC bosses to 'reconsider' axing show over budget cuts after last ever episode airs - as fans say it 'reminds them of the good in humanity'

DIY SOS viewers have asked the BBC to reconsider their decision to shelve the show due to budget cuts as the last ever episode aired on Tuesday night.

Fans of the long-running show, which has been on air for 27 years, said the 'heartwarming' show served as a reminder of the 'good in humanity'.

The final episode was titled A Home for Nathan and it followed Nick and the team as they helped a family in Kidderminster transform their home.

Nathan, aged 11, experiences up to 200 seizures a day and needs round-the-clock care and his parents, John and Emma, were struggling with the demands of caring for him, while his teenage sister, Kira, had increasingly little space in the family home.

The DIY SOS team rallied hundreds of volunteers to create a safer, more practical home for Nathan, while giving the rest of the family room to spend time together.

Sharing their thoughts on X after the emotional episode, viewers begged the broadcaster to change their mind about ending the show.

They said: 'BBC please reconsider shelving DIY SOS as we need more shows that remind us just how incredible the human race is. The shows are always so heartwarming and full of love, and community. Maybe shelve some of the political shows instead? #DIYSOS';

'Given the amount of soulless nonsense on TV. DIY SOS is absolutely the last show that the BBC should 'rest'; 'This lovely family getting a home they can all live in and enjoy together. Nathan can now stay safely in his home forever, the DIY SOS team and volunteers are just wonderful. Tears of joy';

 'I sincerely hope another channel takes up DIY SOS'; 'I can't believe I won't get to watch your show again for years you've changed people's lives. Sobbing at the last episode. Well done to all the people who helped this family'.

'Whoever on your executive committee who decided to cancel DIY should be utterly ashamed of themselves and consider their futures. How can you not watch this programme and not have a tear in your eye? If you don't, you have no heart';

'These families are desperate for help... they shouldn't have to rely on DIY SOS but it's their only hope - and now it's being pulled too'.

Nick Knowles has confirmed that the BBC has told him DIY SOS will never return in its current format after the show was shelved following budget cuts.

The TV presenter, 64, posted a video update on the beloved show's axe on his Instagram page on Tuesday, saying 'it's the end of an era.'

The final episode of the home renovation programme is set to air tonight after it was reported last week that it was one of many BBC shows being rested.

But Nick has now claimed that the show will no longer be made on its current scale but may return in the future in a 'smaller and more cost effective' iteration.

He told his social media followers: 'This is quite an emotional one for us obviously because there is so much doubt and confusion about the future.

Nick Knowles has confirmed that the BBC has told him DIY SOS will never return in its current format after the show was shelved following budget cuts

'We have been told the programme has been shelved and not ended but I have asked the question, "Will it ever come back in the form it is where it builds whole houses for people or builds these hospices and charity places?" and I’ve been told no, if it comes back in the future it will be smaller and more cost effective.

'If you have ever been on DIY SOS and there are 26,000 of you out there who have, you will know you can't do that smaller. It is what is.'

 Sharing his thoughts about it coming to an end, he said: 'I thought I would be OK with it but actually it’s a little bit emotional.

'I’d like to thank everyone we’ve worked with over the last 26 years. If you’re a volunteer, a tradesperson, if you’re a supplier – love you all. It has been an honour to work with you all. We’ve loved every minute of it.

'It’s been the most extraordinary experience and there is more work to go on to and to do but I don’t think it’ll ever be like DIY SOS.'

After the news first broke, Nick revealed that he'd taken time to 'clear his head' as he enjoyed a trip to the coast.

It was revealed earlier this month that the show has been rested as part of the BBC's widely publicised £500million savings plan.

And taking to his Instagram on Friday, Nick shared snaps of himself in scenic locations as he enjoyed a trip to Cornwall, sharing his gratitude for fans' support amid his bad news.

Nick wrote in his caption: 'Back in God’s own country - all my life I have come to Cornwall to clear my head - drive back slower than you drive down they say - and it still works today.'

After describing some of Cornwall's history, he added: 'This weekend the wind is howling and the sea is crashing against the rocks in the north - but as you can see on the south side it’s calm and gentle. I arrived like the north - I’ll return like the south. I ❤️ Cornwall.'

The TV star concluded: 'And thank you for all your messages from the SOS family which is huge, diverse and thoughtful.'

Nick recently revealed his 'disappointment' and said 'there's no endless pot of money at the BBC' as the outlet is preparing to launch a lower-cost spin-off series, DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life, which will revisit successful transformations from the programme's past.

Nick said it has been an 'honour' to front the hit show for over two decades as he shared a series of throwback snaps, including one with Prince William and Prince Harry, on Instagram on Monday.

Nick and his team – who include electrician Billy Byrne, plasterer Chris Frediani and designer Gabrielle Blackman – are said to be devastated by the decision and feel it is a 'slap in the face'.

What does losing shows like DIY SOS say about our priorities as a society and the role of public TV?

What's your view?

A BBC Spokesperson told the Daily Mail: 'In light of the BBC’s savings challenges we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin off show instead from producers South Shore.

'DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life will revisit successes from the show’s past and expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way next year.'

But insiders said the team fear the show will now be permanently axed.

'It’s a disgusting outrage that a BBC show, which genuinely helps some of the neediest people in our country, is being shut down because it’s basically seen as too expensive,' a source said.

'DIY SOS is one of the few shows on television that genuinely represents working-class people, thousands of tradesmen and women offer their time, and often the materials, for free to people in need, even when they’re struggling to make ends meet themselves.'

They said to The Sun: 'Nick and the entire team are devastated, the decision, they were told, is down to cost-savings being needed. To them it’s a slap in the face because so many people give their time and materials for nothing.'

The TV insider added 'tears have been shed by all' and the team feels the BBC 'are turning their back' on communities and charities who need their help more than ever.

The show began all the way back in 1999 as a low-budget format fixing botched renovations.

In 2010, it evolved into DIY SOS: The Big Build, rallying local tradespeople and volunteers to completely transform homes for families dealing with severe illness or disability.

Series 35 is currently airing on TV, with episodes like Bringing Dan Home, where a village pulled together to modify a house for a teenager with complex disabilities.
